Position Description: Business Manager
First Lutheran Church (FLC), Brookings, SD
Employee Category: Part-time Support Staff, Non-Exempt
Primary Function: This position provides support for FLC’s ministry by overseeing the financial and human resource activities of the church. The Business Manager position directs these efforts with technical expertise within a framework of shared ministry, stewardship, and Christian values.
Core Ministry Area: With the direction of the Senior Pastor, the Business Manager provides expert, reliable support of ministry. As they carry out their duties in the areas of finance and personnel management, the Business Manager ensures sustainability and growth of our effort toward the mission of First Lutheran Church: Fostering faith. Duties and Responsibilities:
Finance
- Prepare annual budget, monthly accounting and other reports as requested by Council, Pastors, Finance Committee.
- Oversee and manage all bank activities while ensuring timely payments and deposits.
- Manage and prepare all accounting, budgetary, fiscal, and statistical records.
- Prepare and administers all payroll functions.
- Serve with the Senior Pastor, as the staff liaison for financial administration to the Council and Finance Committee
- Ensure filing of all required federal, state, and synodical reports.
- Monitor and oversee budgetary compliance for all departments.
- Review/correct money counter totals, record incoming funds from various sources, prepare reports and necessary documents for permanent financial records and make bank deposits as needed
- Prepare and reconcile church finance reports including monthly bank statements, income/expense, yearend, budget preparation, audit documents and other reports upon request
- Maintain member contribution records and provide pledge reports/summaries upon request and on a yearly basis
Personnel
- Coordinate administrative and business activities of the church with regards to human resources (including but not limited to payroll, benefits, and personnel policies).
- Assist the Senior Pastor in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff, enforcing church personnel policies.
- Recommend and develop policies, methods, procedures for financial accounting and other administrative services.
- Maintain confidential employee records
- Conduct new hire orientation that includes review of job description, contract, benefits if applicable and expectations
- Perform background checks for all new hires, volunteers and upon request. Maintains records for same.
- Maintain health and pension records
- Act as a willing resource person
Support to Congregational Life
· Communicating with coworkers, congregational members, and outside vendors via email, phone, etc
· Performing other duties and responsibilities as determined by the Senior Pastor
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business preferred
- 3-5 years of experience as an Administrator or Office Manager with experience with accounting software preferred
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite or similar
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working with hands in repetitive motion tasks.
- Requires some standing, stooping, and bending; must be able to lift-up to 15 pounds at times.
Schedule: 20 hours/week; Schedule determined by the candidate and the Senior Pastor upon hiring
Compensation: Pay range $17-21/per hour
