What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at First Lutheran Church?
Shift: Monday and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Custodian ensures that the First Lutheran Church building and grounds are ready and available for the needs of ministries, groups, and staff. This includes working to keep our building and grounds clean and safe, providing exceptional hospitality, and getting people what they need to do the ministry of the church.
Essential Functions
Ensures the First Lutheran facility is welcoming, safe, clean, and ready for use by many groups and ministries, according to these priorities:
- Maintain a high level of cleanliness and presentation in public areas with great attention to the Atrium/Welcome Center/Restrooms/Sanctuary daily. Other areas are cleaned and maintained as used or throughout the week. (Main level areas and restrooms are cleaned first thing every day. Garbage and trash are picked up. Other areas are cleaned as needed throughout the week.)
- Complete room set ups for regularly scheduled and special events according to specifications.
- Respond to guests’ needs and inquiries in a building with a sense of urgency and positivity. Answer guests’ questions and direct them to where they need to be.
- Keep up on maintenance so that rooms and equipment are safe for use.
As part of the Facilities team:
- Oversee building systems such as HVAC, water, and electric are functioning as intended and programmed for current needs.
- Open buildings at the start of each day and close buildings each night. Check the buildings for lights, open doors, and people, and report issues.
- Keep track of all building keys and access.
- Assist with taking care of campus grounds ensuring parking lots, sidewalks, and entry areas are free of debris and snow. Water plants and trees as necessary. (Maintaining grounds snow removal, tree, and lawn care with tools and equipment provided.)
- Has a working knowledge of floor maintenance so that the floors are clean throughout the facility. The summer months will require floor maintenance in preparation for the beginning of fall activities.
- Assist as needed at worship, funerals, and weddings.
- Respond to emergencies quickly and solve problems as they arise.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
