What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Music position at First Presbyterian Church Tifton, GA?
Position: The position is part time (3-5 hours per week) with flexible work hours determined in coordination with the Pastor. The person must have a sense of call, a willingness to embrace Reformed Theology, and a desire to enthusiastically develop and guide the music ministry of First Pres for young and old.
Purpose: The purpose of the position is to direct and oversee the music ministry of First Pres which includes a Chancel Choir, a Children’s Choir, a Handbell Choir, and a few special choral and music related events. The person serving in this position is to have a good rapport with children and adults and work diligently to help fulfill the Vision of First Pres - “Always Be Christ’s Disciples.”
Accountability: The position is to serve the needs of the congregation, under the direction of the Pastor, but is ultimately responsible to the Session. The Session is always available for consultation and will review the job description and salary annually thereafter.
Compensation: Salary is Negotiable.
Duties:
- Follow the direction of the Pastor in leading hymns and all musical portions for First Pres services.
- Work in coordination with staff and choir members to recruit choral participants and establish plans.
- Lead and train members of all choirs during regular rehearsal times and extra times, as needed, and maintain relationships among all choral volunteers through dinners, parties, and other joyful occasions.
- Prepare special musical programs throughout the year (Valentines, Maundy Thursday, Easter, Children/Youth Sunday, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July, Back to School Bash, World Communion, Kirkin, Fall Harvest, Thanksgiving, Christmas Cantata or Madrigal Dinner, Children’s Christmas Musical, Christmas Eve, etc.).
- Arrange for solos, duets, guest musicians, instrumentalists, etc.
- Supervise and coordinate the performance of the pianist/organist for First Pres (if different person).
- Be available to lead music during special occasions, as needed.
- Oversee the maintenance of the organ, pianos, handbells, and other instruments at First Pres.
- Oversee the music ministry budget of First Pres with wisdom and frugality and maintain all music resources.
- Provide musical services for weddings and funerals, as needed.
Participate in monthly Staff meetings, annual Officer Retreats, and annual evaluation meetings, and be willing to do whatever it takes to promote the love of Christ through music at First Pres. l setting.
