Summary: Working as part of a team, the Shelter Supervisor will be responsible for the day to day running and supervision of program site. This position handles the scheduling of staff on shifts for a 24/7 schedule and is responsible for finding coverage for staff callouts and approved days off. The Shelter Supervisor will provide direct guidance and feedback to staff and clients and will complete warnings, write-ups, and reviews.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Specific duties may vary. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Ensure maintenance of a clean, safe, and supportive environment for clients and staff. Understand and implement all FSC policies and procedures.
  • Monitor staff performance and behavior and provide documentation to Program Director when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively and direct staff on duties and responsibilities. Delegate when appropriate.
  • Interact and monitor clients behavior in a positive and professional manner, issuing write ups and facilitating discharges.
  • Encourage clients to comply with facility policy and procedures.
  • Participate and assist monthly community meetings for clients and another for staff.
  • Assist clients if CSA staff require support. Work as a CSA when necessary to meet full staffing.
  • Escalate to Directors attention any observed or suspected abuse and/or neglect of children, disabled individuals, dependent adults and elder/senior citizens.
  • Professionally communicating and planning with partners, such as laundry and food providers.
  • Maintain inventory of the shelter and communicating supply needs with Program Director.
  • Ensure the cabin capacity and availability is completed and reported to Program Director
  • Assist with training for new hires, volunteers and temporary staff on your delegated work shift or as assigned by Program Director.
  • Review information regarding the site by reading emails, daily notes, and incident reports.
  • Perform basic front desk duties to include, answering phones, filing, Microsoft Office, Data entry, monitor surveillance.
  • In case of emergency, as a last resort, be available to cover the shift that cannot be filled.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary as assigned or requested by the Program Director.


Supervisory Responsibilities: Client Support Associates working in the shelter.


Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma and at least 12 months related experience and/or training. An Associate's or Bachelors degree in Social Work or a related field is preferred.


Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.


Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of a computer or tablet, and accompanying applications and software. Knowledge of basic office equipment should include: Data entry, Microsoft, Internet, email, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Working Conditions: Ability to work indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions. This position may require you to work weekends and holidays as needed.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A current CA drivers license, a DMV record, and proof of auto insurance are required. CPR, First Aid, and NARCAN certification preferred.

  • Understanding of the homeless population and their unique needs.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to exercise extreme patience.
  • Must be comfortable working with people and flexible in unpredictable environments.
  • Ability to think quickly and respond calmly to stressful/ emergency situations.
  • Ability to teach and train staff, both new and experienced.
  • Willingness to learn and attend trainings.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality


Other Position Requirements:

  • A background check is required.
  • May be asked to work overtime depending on staffing needs.

First Step Communities operates emergency shelter environments, including some that are outdoors. Exposure to heat, cold, and rain are commensurate with the weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to very noisy.
