In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans. FirstLine now operates five  K-8th grade schools .  Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans.

Position Summary

The Benefits Manager is responsible for administering employee benefit programs, ensuring compliance with employment regulations, and providing outstanding support to employees regarding their benefits. The role encompasses health, wellness, retirement plans, and overseeing the entire open enrollment process. Additionally, the Benefits Manager collaborates with the HR team to implement strategies aligned with employee well-being and retention goals. Key responsibilities include vendor management, benefit payments reconciliation, and ensuring accurate records management within HR systems. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and customer service skills are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initial Onboarding

Conduct benefits orientation sessions for new hires, providing guidance on healthcare, retirement, and wellness programs. Assist with benefit enrollment, answering questions, and helping employees make informed decisions.

  • Collaborate with the HR team to support onboarding and orientation processes.
  • Benefits Administration
  • Manage and administer employee benefits programs, including health, wellness, and retirement offerings.

  • Lead the annual open enrollment process, ensuring clear communication and timely completion of employee enrollments.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all employee benefits inquiries, assisting employees with any issues or questions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, such as ACA, FMLA, COBRA, and 403(b).
  • Maintain accurate employee records in HRIS systems (i.e. UKG), including benefit changes, enrollments, and terminations.
  • Reconcile benefit payments, prepare payroll deductions, and coordinate vendor invoicing.
  • Collaborate with insurance vendors and brokers to problem solve and ensure quality service.
  • Support employee wellness programs, including activities for premium reductions and overall employee well-being.
  • Provide benefits education and resources to employees regarding updates and compliance.
  • Assist HR and payroll teams with integrating benefits data into payroll processing.
  • Offboarding
  • Support offboarding employees with COBRA information, final payroll, and benefits-related items.

  • Assist with processing employee terminations, coordinating required notifications and ensuring compliance with employment regulations.
  • Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; significant professional experience may be substituted.
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in benefits management or administration.
  • Experience managing HRIS systems
  • Demonstrated success managing employee relations and providing customer service.
  • Experience in handling benefits compliance (FMLA, ACA, 403(b), etc.).
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel.

  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk as necessary.
  • Light lifting of up to 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to drive and travel between school locations as needed.
  • Reports to : Chief Human Resources Officer

    Salary : Competitive and commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package is provided, including a 403(b) retirement plan.
