Job Description: The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for developing and implementing a long-range strategic fundraising program with an emphasis on donor cultivation, major gifts, community and civic giving, planned giving, and capital fundraising. The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for implementing and achieving the organizational fund development plan toward the goal of increased donor acquisition and retention, with a directed focus on major gift donors. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for maintaining a high-quality presence in the general community and the long-term care arena.
Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
- Creation of a comprehensive annual fundraising plan.
- Work in conjunction with the Executive Director and Development Committee to develop annual development metrics.
- Responsible for achieving the annual fundraising goals set by the Executive Director and approved by the Board of Directors.
- Identify targeted funding sources, such as major donors and corporations, and develop solicitation strategies
- Identify appropriate sources for grant solicitations and work with Development Associate on initial proposals.
- Ongoing assessment for growth of fundraising plan for all segments: Foundations, corporations, government, service groups and individuals
- Establish and maintain partnerships with corporations, service organizations, and churches.
- Meet established solicitation, visits, and financial goals.
- Oversee fundraising mailings working with the Development Associate.
- Manage end-of-year appeal and spring appeal.
- Work with the Executive Director and Director of Finance and Administration to develop an annual fundraising budget.
- Has primary responsibility for planning, tracking, and implementing all cultivation and solicitation strategies for those prospects.
- Personally cultivates, solicits, and has stewardship of major donors and prospects working with the Development Associate.
- Promote services of the organization while out in the community.
- Manage comprehensive donor recognition program
- Supervise the Development and Communication Team to ensure all messages are consistent and goals are being met.
- Oversee key responsibilities of the performance managing the donor database to ensure all records are up to date and accurate; oversee performance on generating thank you letters and donor acknowledgment; oversee the management of events; and oversee management of mailings and appeals.
- Oversee key responsibilities of grant management and major donor development.
- Oversee key responsibilities of all communication efforts including website, flyers, newsletters, press releases, outreach events etc.
Communications
- Works with the Director of Communication, establishing annual goals and evaluating performance.
- Work with the Director of Communications on the development and implementation of the Communication Plan.
- Work with the Director of Communications to develop related fundraising materials.
- Work with the Director of Communications to create and disseminate press releases about Center events; actively maintain media contacts.
- Work in collaboration with program staff to ensure coordination of outreach and PR efforts.
- Ensure that the organization is adequately represented at health fairs, volunteer fairs, and other outreach events.
- Makes presentations in the community and represents the organization at community meetings.
- Work with the Director of Communications to ensure the organization's website is up to date.
- Work with the Director of Communication to ensure that all communications (letters, emails, flyers, etc.) are consistent with the organization's brand and strategic vision.
- Oversee newsletter (electronic and print) communication.
Events
- Oversee the two annual fundraising events with the Development Team
Grants
- Work in conjunction with the Grants Manager to meet annual grant goals as set in the annual development and fundraising plan.
- Work with the Grants Manager to identify appropriate foundation, private, and public grants relevant to the organization's programs and services
- Work with Grants Manager to maintain and develop relationships with grant organizations.
- Responsible for approval of all grant applications.
Government Relations
- Work in conjunction with the Executive Director and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors to have a regular presence with the Fairfax County and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.
- Is responsible for maintaining a presence at the Fairfax County Long Term Care Coordinating Council (LTCCC) meetings.
- Work with the Executive Director on maintaining relationships with key contacts at Fairfax County and Loudoun County.
Board Relations
- Serve as staff liaison for and coordinate with the Development Committee on the development of strategic fundraising plan, annual development plan, and short- and long-term fundraising goals as they relate to the budget and the strategic plan of the organization
- Assist the Executive Director with administration of board affairs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fundraising, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
- Five to Seven years experience in fundraising, community or public relations activities, or any combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising, including annual campaigns and major gifts, year-over-year growth in fundraising efforts, and the ability to plan and act strategically. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in donor management software, and CRM database management.
