What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laborer/Utility Worker position at Florence County SC?
Job Description
The Laborer/Utility Worker is responsible for assisting in maintaining all County roads and drainage systems.
Essential Functions:
- Receives and responds to work orders, to include opening water drains, removing trees and vegetation adjacent to roads, removing shrubbery and other vegetation from around signs and structures, etc.
- Gathers and transports equipment to job sites.
- Performs manual labor to accomplish a variety of road and drainage maintenance functions.
- Utilizes various types of tools as necessary to perform road maintenance and construction duties.
- Operates heavy machinery to accomplish a variety of road construction and maintenance tasks as needed.
- Operates truck while machinery is in operation on the roadway.
- Maintains a log of equipment location and mileage used.
- Performs routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of department vehicles and equipment.
- Completes vehicle and equipment maintenance reports indicating needed repairs and services performed.
- Documents and informs sign specialist of missing signs for replacement.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- Requires a high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must have valid S. C. driver’s license.
- May perform off-road commercial (CDL) driving duties.
- Carpentry skills a plus.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 50 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 95%.
