The Assistant Editor position exists to make creative contributions to articles, books, and/or curricula for a particular audience.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Character/Spiritual:
Exemplifies Ephesians 5:1-2, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children and walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us...”
Pursues the Great Commission given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Focus; adheres to the Standard of Moral Conduct and Statement of Faith; upholds Focus on the Family's ministry in prayer
Prays personally for Focus on the Family’s staff and constituents and may occasionally lead in a public prayer
Engages in Christian ministry
Demonstrates behaviors aligned with FOF core values

The Assistant Editor position exists to make creative contributions to articles, books, and/or curricula for a particular audience.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Evaluates proposals and manuscripts from in-house and outside authors
- Edits and/or rewrites manuscripts as appropriate, organizing facts, interview quotes, and other material into the most compelling flow
- Creates original copy
- Proofreads copy at various stages of development
- Maintains currency with target audience through extensive reading, personal contact, and broad based research
- Interfaces with authors and leaders on issues
- Consults with Orthodoxy and legal counsel on content as required
- Attends regular divisional and other staff meetings
- Interacts with audience through electronic and interpersonal means (answering emails; web-board communication, etc.)
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Office environment
- Some travel possible
- This role may require occasional travel including nights and weekends

- Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English or comparable field or experience
- 1-3 years editing and writing experience
- Working knowledge of FOF missions, philosophy, values, and objectives
- Creativity in thinking, planning, and writing
- Ability to clearly articulate and to defend a position
- Ability to deal with stress due to deadline pressure
- Basic organizational skills
- Ability to apply imaginative approaches to others’ ideas
- Competent in use of PC/Macintosh software
- Ability to communicate ideas and issues to audience in public forums (on-line and in person)
- Ability to deal tactfully with people through various mediums
