We are seeking a Legal Assistant to join our International Litigation and Arbitration Department (ILAD), based in our New York office. In addition to our renowned Public International Law practice, Foley Hoag boasts a sophisticated and widely recognized International Arbitration practice that handles complex international investment treaties and commercial arbitration disputes. As a legal assistant, you will support an assigned team of attorneys with administrative and research tasks and gain an unparalleled opportunity to work directly on high-profile and innovative international law and arbitration matters. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and resourceful professional with an interest in international law. The role requires onsite presence three to four days per week, subject to change. Specific days in the office will be determined by your supervisor. Candidates must be available to work overtime hours when necessary, including attendance at hearings and trials abroad.
Responsibilities
- Maintain organized case and attorney files (evidence, case filings, correspondence, etc.)
- Conduct factual research on matters
- Provide support during hearings and meetings
- Coordinate and modify complex travel arrangements
- Prepare background materials for conferences, panels, and other marketing initiatives
- Conduct cite-checking, assemble documentary evidence, style footnotes in accordance with the style guide
- Prepare expense reports
- Prepare materials related to the firm’s billing process
- Maintain calendars, schedule meetings, and book conference rooms
- Complete daily diaries for timekeepers
- Proofread work product
- Become familiar and stay up to date with firm policies, legal procedures, matters, and clients relevant to assigned practice area(s)
- Perform office duties as requested
- Operate with discretion, professionalism, and courtesy at all times, particularly with sensitive or confidential information
- Participate in firm-provided training programs
Qualifications
The Legal Assistant must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, technological savvy, and interpersonal effectiveness. The successful candidate for this position will have outstanding attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to adjust priorities and problem-solve in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Candidates who possess many, if not all, of the qualifications outlined should still apply:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., political science, international relations, legal studies)
- Research and/or administrative experience in a related field preferred
- Critical thinking and research skills
- Strong writer with prior experience proofreading and editing content
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver work in an efficient and timely fashion
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Client service orientation
- Demonstrated ability to listen to others, follow instructions and accept feedback
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to work independently and strong sense of accountability
- Flexibility to work overtime, including weekends, as needed
- Ability to commute to and from the firm office location on regular basis

The Compensation range is $58,000 to $72,000 commensurate with related experience and qualifications. The salary of the candidate selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, specialty, and training. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the firm's reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
