The Manager of Volunteer Engagement will work with the Regional Manager of Volunteer Engagement and the Director of Volunteer Engagement to assure the Raleigh volunteer program is developed and maintained in a way that supports the work and mission of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. This position will also serve as a resource org-wide for best practices to assure food and safety guidelines are enforced within the volunteer program at the Raleigh headquarters.


Job Responsibilities: 

(20%) Supervise and manage the Raleigh volunteer team; set clear expectations, monitor the performance, and conduct of employees, support employee professional development, coach employees, training, and provide feedback. 


(20%) Serve as a liaison between Office of Volunteer Engagement and General Operations to assure Food Safety Standard Operation Procedures and Warehouse Safety guidelines are followed and implemented within the volunteer program, at Raleigh, except where indicated. Including AIB standards and SOPs.

  • Maintain cleanliness of all project areas and serve as a material manager for the volunteer program at all branches, which entails ensuring enough usable pallets and bins are available and organized; combining pallets to save space; and product inventory.
  • Complete documentation related to general operations and other department as needed.
  • Attend Food and Safety Committee meetings as needed.


(20%) Serve as a program manager to assure all the stages and daily operations of the volunteer program (at the Raleigh branch) runs efficiently by monitoring, implementing, improving, and evaluating best practices such as: logistics and operation of volunteer sessions, volunteer communication, volunteer recognition, scheduling, volunteer data tracking via CERVIS, application of SOPs, warehouse and food safety policies and procedures. (20%)

  • Utilize CERVIS daily to capture hours and volunteer data in an accurate and effective way. Create volunteer schedules and communicate with volunteers.
    Train and instruct both large groups of volunteers, as well as individuals, on volunteer project. Including incorporating
  • appropriate education to increase awareness of hunger issues.
    Obtain all necessary materials for daily volunteer activities, including product and supplies by working with Food Sourcing and General Operations Managers.
  • Work and collaborate with Director of Volunteer Engagement and Regional Manager of Volunteer Engagement to assure program development by implement initiatives, strategic plan, event planning and other action items as needed.


(20%) Work with the Director of Volunteer Engagement and Regional Manager of Volunteer Engagement to implement volunteer recruitment and retention strategies by proactively engaging with volunteers, community members, and public / private organizations as a representative of the Volunteer Program and Food Bank.

  • Formally and informally recognize volunteers and their contributions to the Food Bank. Work with the Director of Volunteer Engagement and Regional Manager of Volunteer Engagement to plan and execute volunteer recognition events.
  • Participate in network and community engagement opportunities to assist with volunteer recruitment efforts and to represent the Food Bank.


(10%) Assist with the implementation of a comprehensive stewardship program that appropriately and consistently promotes the cultivation of donors at all levels. Including actively monitoring and communicating with the development team about potential volunteer – to – donor individuals and groups. 

  • Complete other duties as assigned by Regional Manager of Volunteer Engagement.


(10%) Ensure cross – functional collaboration within the organization to provide volunteer support for special events / programs and other departments including Community Health and Engagement, Food Sourcing and Network, Programs, Development, and other internal departments as needed. Including providing logistical support to Sort-of-rama, Yam Jam, and other events as needed. 

  • Participate in weekly Office of Volunteer Engagement conference calls.
  • Support and work at other branches when needed.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory and leadership experience, including managing people, planning, organization, delegation, and teamwork.
  • Strong work ethic, excellent customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization professionally.
  • Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse groups.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Must be able to pass the organization’s forklift certification test within 60 days.
