What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vice President / Vice Chair position at For Us, By Us PGH?
For Us, By Us PGH — Vice President of the Board
About the Organization
For Us, By Us PGH is a grassroots nonprofit led by and for LGBTQ people. We’re building the kinds of spaces we’ve longed for — places of connection, healing, learning, and truth-telling. Through peer support, storytelling, LGBTQ education, and community-based mental health advocacy, we help LGBTQ people feel seen, held, and empowered — while working to transform the systems that care for us.
Our vision for queer healing is rooted in diagnosing and treating both external and internal barriers to wellness. While many organizations do vital external work — fighting legislation, supporting housing, organizing pride — we also center what happens inside: the internalized shame, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and grief we carry.
This is both external and internal work. Real liberation means healing inside and out. Internal healing external action = a strong, resilient (but also tender and thriving) LGBTQ community. Less suffering, more love. That’s the dream.
Our work is inspired by lived experience, community collaboration, and the belief that healing isn’t linear — it’s layered, raw, and deeply human. We're learning as we go, building frameworks from grassroots mentorship, online training, and hands-on practice.
We are deeply committed to heart-led leadership, collective care, and community healing. This work is personal — and we believe leadership should be too. Our values are: Rooted in connection, Grounded in truth, Empowered by love, Led with bravery, and Held in vulnerability.
Purpose (Vice President of the Board)
The Vice President of the Board plays a vital supporting role in the leadership of For Us, By Us PGH. Working closely with the President, Executive Director, and fellow board members, the VP helps guide the internal flow of the organization — offering operational support, grounded leadership, and steady follow-through.
This person is our glue: someone who brings structure to vision, keeps folks accountable with care, and helps the board run smoothly without needing to be front and center. When the President is unavailable, the VP steps in to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives behind the scenes, who brings gentle leadership and a systems mindset to the table. Someone who values progress and people. Someone who shows up with a steady presence, ready to co-create a nonprofit that centers healing, truth, and community.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as second-in-command to the President and step in to lead meetings or decision-making when needed.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, President, and board members to maintain alignment on strategy, accountability, and internal operations.
- Help develop and maintain board systems, such as meeting agendas, task tracking, timelines, and follow-up procedures.
- Support internal communication and board cohesion, helping everyone stay informed, engaged, and organized.
- Assist in fundraising, donor outreach, and event coordination in collaboration with the rest of the board.
- Help onboard new board members, sharing tools and context to support their transition.
- Act as a values-centered leader who supports conflict resolution, team morale, and collective clarity.
What This Role Doesn’t Do
- This role does not supervise staff or manage daily operations.
- This role does not act independently of the board or Executive Director — all big moves happen collaboratively.
- It’s a supportive leadership role — rooted in consistency, not control.
Qualifications
We’re looking for someone who doesn’t just want to hold a title — but wants to hold space. Someone who believes that systems and care can coexist. Someone who wants to help shape the future with intention and integrity.
- Organizational, operational, or administrative experience (professional, lived, or volunteer-based).
- Clear communicator with a love for structure and a soft, collaborative spirit.
- Comfort supporting board-level decisions and high-level conversations with compassion and clarity.
- A team player who can both lead and follow, depending on the need.
- Prior nonprofit or board experience is a plus, but not required — we care more about how you show up.
- Familiarity with LGBTQ issues and a deep commitment to equity and collective healing.
- Must have access to a computer and reliable internet, and be available for regular virtual meetings.
