Main purpose of job:
The British Government’s Embassy in Washington D.C has an exciting opportunity for a proactive and meticulous person to join HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), as the Local Staff Assistant to HMRC’s Fiscal Crime Liaison Office (FCLO).
The main purpose of the local staff Assistant to the HMRC Fiscal Crime Liaison Office is the provision of operational support and assistance to the FCLOs in achieving their objectives as set by HMRC through maintaining and strengthening the efficient relationship between regional host agencies, especially US, and HMRC.
This is a chance to directly contribute to operational management of HMRC’s assigned matters in post. The role will involve providing essential administrative and logistical support to the HMRC FCLO’s work in reducing threats to UK Tax and Customs regimes from organised crime, tax avoidance/tax evasion, other fiscal fraud and associated money laundering, including the pursuit of criminal finances and other assets.
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of their responsibilities and how these contribute to the priorities the team. Be familiar with the use of an array of digital technologies, how to make use of them and offer suitable suggested improvements. Is able to work with focus and pace to get the job done on time and to a high standard. Has sufficient proficiency of communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Roles and responsibilities:
- Conduct office administration duties under the instructions of the Fiscal Crime Liaison Officers and in accordance with policy, standard operating procedures and to comply with UK criminal justice standards. Duties include: records creation and management; vehicle management; maintaining office accounts; maintenance of the asset, gifts and hospitality registers; planning travel and visits; and organising events.
- Compile verbal and written briefings as directed, including regular monthly management reporting.
- Provide open source (Tier 1) research support, especially exploitation of information sources.
- Maintain oversight of regional projects as required including; supporting monitoring and evaluation of their impact; monitoring budgets to ensure value for money; and producing narrative reports to deadlines.
- Monitor FCLO office mailbox and telephone so that intelligence logs and messages are responded to in a timely fashion and / or directed as required.
- Support broader corporate/embassy work as directed by the FCLOs, especially during any crisis response.
Resources managed:
No line management responsibilities. There is however a requirement to maintain and manage the post budget and provide support to the budget holder.
Essential on arrival:
- A minimum of 3 years relevant administrative experience in a similar environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain discrete and handle sensitive information.
- Proven time management skills and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines under pressure.
- The permanent role requires SECRET (O) security clearance so that they may work in the same office environment as the FCLO’s and employment is subject to these clearances being met.
Desirable:
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Applications.
- Experience with financial and budget management.
- Ability to work within a small team environment, as well as on one’s own unsupervised.
- A visas are acceptable at the Embassy and Consulates. The UK Mission to the UN (UKMIS) accepts G visas, and British Defense Staff (BDS) outposts accept A or NATO visas.

Working patterns:
Core 8 hours per day between 07:30 – 16:30 to align with UK/US time. There will not be a requirement to be on-call or work outside of normal office hours.
Due to security restrictions based on remote access to UK/HMRC intelligence systems the job holder will be required to work in the office only – no home working unless in exceptional circumstances.
Jobholder may on occasion be required to attend virtual meetings/calls with colleagues based in the UK or overseas.
