Clinical Director
Main function
Responsible for supervising and directing nursing care in all clinical areas of the facility according to its policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives. Coordinates and directs patient care and related activities of the facility according to accepted standards. Shares responsibility for the financial activities of the clinical services. Oversees patient scheduling in all clinical areas. Analyzes and evaluates nursing care to improve the quality of care given. Works closely with administrative and medical staff in coordinating patient-care service functions. May assume responsibilities for administrator in his or her absence.
Duties and
responsibilities
1. Philosophy

2. General
a) Participates in facility committees, meetings, in-services, and activities
b) Shares input regarding short- and long-term goals of the facility
c) Maintains facility and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times; reports deficiencies to the administrator
d) Recommends need for new/different items in regard to trends and needs of the facility
e) Reports deficiencies in services provided by contracted providers (e.g., pathology, radiology, housekeeping) to the administrator
3. Communication
a) Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers
b) Interacts with others in a positive, respectful, and considerate manner
c) Promotes effective communication among the facility’s clinical areas, business office, and physician practices
4. Financial practices
a) Promotes cost containment and efficient use of facility resources
b) Analyzes clinical areas and makes recommendations for potential cost-effective improvements
c) Monitors FTE utilization and makes recommendations to promote cost-effective man-hour practices
d) Conducts cost analyses to promote cost-effective practices
e) Makes suggestions on purchasing equipment and supplies to provide optimum patient care within budget allowances
5. Compliance program
a) Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization’s adopted compliance program
b) Performs according to established compliance policies and procedures
6. Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI)
a) Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization's adopted Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI), policies, and procedures
b) Performs according to established Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI) policies and procedures
c) Serves on the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI)committee
d) Evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care
e) Monitors patient-care programs and reviews procedures, outcome standards, and criteria
f) Analyzes data from the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI) and prepares reports and recommendations for evaluation by the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI)coordinator
g) Successfully contributes to the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI)process and identifies his or her role and contributions upon administrator's request
7. Safety/risk-management program
a) Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities
b) Implements practices and regulations adopted to provide safety in the healthcare environment
c) Monitors the facility's physical environment and initiates methods for maintaining safety, comfort, cleanliness, and order; reports physical-environment status to the administrator
d) Works with the safety officer to resolve observed or suspected safety violations, hazards, and policy/procedure non-compliance
e) Responds to emergency situations competently
f) Submits information to licensed healthcare risk manager for preparation of risk-management reports
g) Ensures that OSHA requirements are met by clinical staff and that supplies are readily available
h) Ensures proper temperature, humidity, ventilation, and lighting to provide a comfortable and safe working environment; reports deficiencies to the administrator
8. Professional competence
a) Participates in continuing education and other learning experiences
b) Shares knowledge gained in continuing education with staff
c) Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations
d) Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities
e) Welcomes suggestions and recommendations
f) Makes suggestions to the administrator for continuing education of clinical staff members
g) Assists with comprehensive and informative orientation programs for new employees in all clinical areas
9. Patient care
a) Applies accepted clinical nursing principles and practices to patient-care activities in the facility
b) Coordinates patient-care activities with surgeons and anesthesia providers to provide continuity of patient care
c) Assists facility staff in identifying and solving problems with nursing care provided
d) Oversees all nursing activities during emergencies to verify that patient needs are met
e) Participates in primary care of patients as needed and oversees clinical areas to verify that patient needs are met
f) Enforces nursing practice standards and licensing/accreditation rules and regulations to provide quality patient care
g) Recommends revision of patient-care policies and procedures as necessary to conform to accepted principles and practices
h) Respects patients’ rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
i) Supervises care of the operating room area/equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times
j) Controls patient/staff traffic to help prevent infections
10. Daily operations
a) Coordinates and monitors operational activities for effective and efficient management of daily operation; reports deficiencies to the administrator
b) Prepares staffing schedules in accordance with vacations and holidays
c) Prepares daily personnel assignments and delegates duties according to experience and skill level to provide quality patient care
d) Coordinates and cross-trains clinical staff to create a productive work environment for all clinical areas
e) Reviews daily time and attendance sheets and maintains attendance log
f) Coordinates scheduling of procedures with scheduling personnel
g) Evaluates the performance of all clinical personnel and works to continuously improve the quality of care and services
h) Assists in counseling clinical employees and makes recommendations for salary adjustments, promotions, and/or termination
i) Observes performance of all clinical staff members and provides feedback to administration
j) Interprets and implements established facility policies and procedures
k) Chairs or participates on designated committees
l) Submits reports on the facility’s fiscal, human, and material resource requirements
m) Analyzes clinical documentation to ensure facility’s policies/procedures are being followed
n) Serves as a liaison between patients, families, nursing, and medical staff to coordinate quality patient care
o) Promotes harmonious relations and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team
11. Materials management
a) Applies material-management principles to establish procedures for use
b) Promotes cost-effectiveness and implements procedures to control waste
c) Monitors the care and cleaning of equipment to maintain proper working conditions; identifies and evaluates the need for items relative to trends and physician requests
d) Reviews inventory for availability of supplies and equipment necessary to meet patient needs
e) Initiates requisitions to replenish inventory and to order new products as needed
f) Oversees inventory, maintaining adequate supplies and equipment, and providing for their economic use
g) Monitors and verifies that required materials-management documentation (i.e., purchase orders, purchase logs, etc.) is current and complete
Responsibility for assets
Responsible for equipment, medical-supply inventory, manuals, documentation, and employee files
Qualifications

Requirements
Required
1. High school graduate or GED certificate recipient
2. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
3. RN with an active license in Arizona
4. BLS/ACLS/PALS certification
5. Healthcare-management experience
6. Evidence of leadership qualities
7. Strong ethical and moral character references
8. Language skills adequate for high-level written, interpersonal, and telephone communication in American English
Preferred
1. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing
2. ASC experience
