Job Description:
The Nursery Sales and Operations Assistant is a supportive staff position, and will work alongside the nursery sales employees and operations crew, conducting tasks to improve and support nursery operations and sales.
The Sales and Operations Assistant will help create an exceptional customer experience, by assisting customers throughout their nursery and plant purchasing experience. This position requires a strong comprehension of Rhode Island and Southern New England ornamental trees, shrubs and perennials. The assistant will assist customers at every point of the sales process, including but not limited to answering plant related questions, directing them to the appropriate area and/or person, working with them to help make informed plant purchases, working with the field crew to retrieve plant orders, and writing up sales/pickup/delivery receipts.
The sales and operation assistant will also support daily nursery tasks including pruning, moving and sorting plants, organizing plant material, potting, checking inventory, and supporting nursery staff as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Greet and assist customers as they arrive and follow appropriate sales process, including pickup and delivery requests
- Have understanding of plant inventory, general growth habit, and plant prices, and be able to discuss and inform customers in the field
- Be able to discuss plant options and layout with customers from a design perspective
- Communicate and work with field crew and drivers to retrieve plant orders
- Relocate, shift and organize plant material on a daily basis
- Prune and clean plants, as needed
- Clean and organize material storage and greenhouse areas, as needed
- Assist with end of season operations, which includes cleaning, organizing and moving all plant material into greenhouses
- Assist and support staff in start of season operations which includes, cleaning, organizing and moving plant material out of greenhouses
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years customer service related experience
- At least 1 year in nursery or plant related field
- Strong understanding and ability to identify ornamental and native plants of Southern New England
- Education or certificate in horticulture, botany, arboriculture, plant biology strongly preferred
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to multitask
- Ability to physically lift between 20-40lbs, repeatedly
- Ability and willingness to be on your feet and moving physically for majority part of the day
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Must have a strong work ethic, be a team player, and have the willingness to learn and adapt
- Ability to see the bigger picture and look ahead at what needs to be done
- Proficient math skills
- Ability to switch between tasks and prioritize tasks, as demands shift continually shift
- Some comprehension of Spanish preferred, but not required
Schedule:
This position is seasonal and daily operations are sometimes weather dependent. The nursery is open April- December and closes January- March. Work schedule is April through December, Monday- Friday 7am - 4pm and Saturdays 7am- noon. Off season sales work could be available.
Pay:
$18-$22/ hour with potential for pay increase depending on performance. Hourly rate will be determined based on experience level.
