What we are looking for:
This position provides leadership through policy and operational oversight and direction of program activities for the West Oregon District within the Oregon Department of Forestry (The West Oregon District, which has three Units, is one of five districts within the Northwest Oregon Area. work location is located in Philomath. Duties Include:
  • Maintain political contacts with local legislators, county commissioners, and maintain close working relationships with the Board of Directors for the District's respective forest protective association.
  • Oversee all programmatic functions administered within the District's geographical area including Protection from Fire, Forest Resources, State Forests, and Administration Division.
  • Directly supervise, direct, and monitor the work of subordinate managers that supervise employees assigned to the various programs.
  • Oversee the implementation of plans and strategies at the District level to accomplish agency goals and objectives that are established from the Board of Forestry - Vision for Oregon's Forests, Agency Strategic Plan, and Department's Mission and Vision.
  • Make decisions regarding supervision, coordination and general administration of permanent and seasonal workforce, prioritization of resource allocation, purchasing and procurement, specific programmatic activities in fire prevention, detection and suppression, state forest management, forest practices administration, landowner assistance, administration of the Oregon Smoke Management program, law enforcement, equipment pool, and building and equipment maintenance.
  • Serve as a member of the agencies Leadership Team.
Minimum Qualifications
Eight years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, forest management, etc., which include:
A) development of program rules and policies
b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans
c) program evaluation
and
d) budget preparation.
OR
Bachelor's degree in forestry or a closely related natural resources field and five years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, or forest management which include:
a) development of program rules and policies
b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans
c) program evaluation
and
d) budget preparation.
Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to provide policy and operational leadership to the West Oregon District, including motivating, developing, and directing employees.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with landowners, operators, other state and federal agencies, legislators, local government officials and the general public.
  • A background in wildland fire and forestry, specifically related to the Pacific Northwest forests.
