What we are looking for:
As the Protection Unit Forester, you will manage the Toledo/Newport Unit on the West Oregon District within the Department of Forestry. This includes overseeing all programs administered within the Unit’s geographical area, such as Protection from Fire, Stewardship Forestry, and Administration. Duties include:
- Supervising, directing, and monitoring the work of unskilled, skilled, administrative, technical, and professional employees assigned to the various programs.
- Planning/approval of plans and purchases and implementing plans and strategies at the Unit level to accomplish Unit/District/State goals/objectives in line with the Department’s Mission/Vision and Strategic Plan.
- Assist in achieving the Department’s Affirmative Action goals in recruitment and selection by considering equal employment opportunities and the Department’s Affirmative Action Plan.
- Develops fiscal budgets at the Unit level.
- Responsible for the short- and long-term planning for the various programs administered on the Unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Six years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, forest management, etc., which include assisting with:
a) development of program rules and policies
b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans
c) program evaluation
and
d) budget preparation
OR
Bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and three years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, or forest management which includes which include assisting with:

Bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and three years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, or forest management which includes which include assisting with:
a) development of program rules and policies
b) development of long and short-range goals and plans
c) program evaluation
and
d) budget preparation
Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.
Desired Skills:
- This position requires skill in effective oral and written communication.
- Strong background in the Fire Protection Program and Forest Resources Program.
- Ability to make a wide variety of decisions related to the planning, supervision, coordination, and general administration of permanent/seasonal workforce.
- Ability to make a wide variety of decisions related to Law enforcement (fire and forest practice act), fire suppression, forest smoke management, purchasing, building, equipment maintenance, and local computer administration.
- Ability to make decisions regarding budgeting and fiscal control on how much to budget to meet goals and when and how to spend money to stay within budget authorization.
