JOB SUMMARY
The Forester reports to the Timber Manager. This position is in a broad class and performs a
variety of skilled work requiring A.A./B.A./B.S. in Forestry. This position requires excellent,
positive interpersonal communication skills in both writing and speaking. The Forester must
have the ability to work well with multiple and varied stakeholders, groups, and individuals.
Must have the ability to use GPS, directional compass, and topographical maps effectively.
Must be able to work independently and be self-directed. Must possess high quality timber
cruising skills, knowledge of log grading, and species identification.
Freres Engineered Wood is looking to add a forester to its existing team. The position will
be based out of Lyons, Oregon. This position will be involved in timber sale acquisition as a
timber cruiser with other varied job functions. The position consists on average, 80% field
work and 20% office work. This is a full-time, exempt position with salary level dependent
upon skills, experience, and education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Consistently promote high standards through personal example.
Cruise, inspect and value logs from specific sales.
Determine species, diameter class and corresponding values.
Ability to design and implement a timber cruise.
Project layout, using aerial photos, maps, GIS systems, and ground reconnaissance.
Plan, manage and inspect operations. This includes but is not limited to logging, road
construction, road maintenance and silvicultural operations.
Perform contract supervision (contractor compliance) of contract logging, contract
cutting, maintenance and other activities while fully complying with government
regulations.
Direct quality control concerning harvesting activities, as well as felling, bucking, and
sorting procedures.
Ensure full and appropriate compliance with Oregon Forest Practice Laws.
Maintain good communication and excellent working relationships with outside agencies and companies (ODF, BLM, USFS, ODFW, County Departments and private timberland owners) Stay abreast of industry technology, trends, new regulations, and laws, attend meetings as necessary. Ability to manage multiple projects to final completions. Fire preparedness, Firefighting, suppression, and other functions as required. Good work history/ attendance record. Ability to handle multiple tasks and manage efficiently and effectively.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities are not limited to the above-mentioned and may include assisting other
branches with reasonable and related tasks.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk,
sit, talk, or hear.
Required to hike steep densely forested terrain and walk long distances frequently
Exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS
A.A./B.A./B.S. in Forestry
Work experience in Forestry or logging (2-5 years) preferred.
Must have valid drivers license and clean DMV record.
Must live within 40 miles radius of Freres Lyons main office.
Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work well with others.
Must have ability to use GPS, directional compass, and topographical maps.
Ability to work independently.
Timber cruising skills, knowledge of log grading, and species identification.
Must be eligible to operate company vehicles in accordance with company guidelines
up to 50,000 miles per year.
Proven leadership skills.
Good analytical, problem-solving skills and math skills.
Ability to make important decisions under pressure.
Time management skills
Computer literacy in commonly used business software products such as email, spreadsheets, and word processing.
Excellent team player.
