Position Information
The Recreation Program Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing field trips and other special activities that are offered by the Outdoor Recreation Division. The Specialist assists in the management of the overall program operations under the guidance of the Recreation Supervisor/Coordinator. They ensure positive and engaging experience for all customers, and support Program Assistants in the operation of programs.
Job Summary
- Help oversee the planning, teaching and facilitation of outdoor adventure, outdoor education and environmental education activities including classes, camps, special events, etc.
- Assist with the scheduling, planning and facilitation of school field trips and other special programs
- Oversee preparation for Outdoor and Environmental Education activities, including distribution of introductory emails, creation of class rosters, and other administrative tasks
- Supervise and support Program Assistants in planning and facilitation of programs
- Help manage and organize outdoor adventure, outdoor education and environmental education supplies and equipment.
- Keep activity space clean and organized.
- Assist with animal care and animal exhibits.
- Assist with front desk operations.
- Organize library resources and evaluate needs.
- Maintain and pursue knowledge of environmental education, exhibit animals, conservation and outdoor trends.
- Provide excellent customer service to customers and visitors.
- Prepare, complete and maintain various correspondence, evaluations, forms, records, reports and requests.
- Aid in operational aspects at Sawnee Mountain Preserve.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Additional Functions
This classification is designated as a safety-sensitive position which is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.
- Perform general/clerical tasks, including answering phone calls, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, processing incoming/outgoing mail, distributing documentation, or posting information at parks.
- Assist with light maintenance/housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining visitor center sites or work areas, including sweeping/mopping floors, cleaning tables/counters, cleaning kitchen sinks/refrigerators, picking up trash, and setting up tables/chairs.
- Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
We are seeking an enthusiastic and responsible individual who is at least 18 years old and has a passion for youth development and outdoor learning. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with children, with a strong understanding of leadership, program management, and team coordination. They should be adaptable, organized, and capable of taking on leadership roles while managing a team in a dynamic outdoor environment. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the ability to create a positive and safe environment for participants. Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions and actively engage in recreational activities.
