What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bailiff position at Forsyth County?
This position is per diem, as needed.
Attends court sessions and other relevant hearings; assists the Judge as directed; at the judge’s pleasure, assists the public throughout the court process.
Assists the court by ensuring that the courtroom is ready for use: Judge’s nameplate is in proper position; water pitchers are filled and on judge’s bench and counsel tables; courtroom is generally clean and functional; equipment is operational.
Carries out the judge’s instructions: calls the court to order; calls/escorts witnesses; relays messages to parties/witnesses who may be inside or outside the courtroom; is attentive to any directives given to the jury, counsel, spectators or other parties in the courtroom.
Assists the Clerk of Court during Jury Assemblies by providing informational brochures, distributing badges, answering juror questions, completing the summons paperwork when necessary, escorting and monitoring the juror pool.
Under oath and the direct supervision of the judge, bailiffs are charged with the custody of jurors and juries: insulating them from outside contacts and influences; restricting communications to and from jurors and sequestering when necessary.
Reports juror irregularities to the presiding Judge.
Assists and directs the public throughout the court process.
Performs other related work as required and may be further defined.
This position requires an individual who possesses a high level of professionalism, civility and discretion.
This position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, occasionally use stairs, carry up to 20 lbs., and work long hours that may extend beyond 5:00 p.m.
