The Braillist supports instruction by performing tasks such as Braille translation, transcribing, and formatting to facilitate accessibility for students with visually impairments.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General Office Duties

  • Maintain accurate records of all transcriptions
  • Maintain log of materials ordered and maintained
  • Initiate repair process of Vision Services' equipment
  • Maintain inventory for VI department, including library of braille (tactile) materials and equipment
  • Maintain properly labeled file on all materials, which should be retained for future use
  • Maintain a resource file for locating alternative sources of braille materials
Compliance
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Attend workshops/seminars for continuous upgrading of services and equipment
  • Remain current with use of technology as it relates to braille production, tactile graphics, and document formatting to support students using screen readers and other low vision devices
Teacher Support
  • Carry out braille formatting for literary, foreign language, and Nemeth code rules, except when modifications are requested by Teacher of students with Visual Impairments (TVI) to accommodate braille reading ability of individual students
  • Provide braille embossed materials as determined by the TVI
  • Assist with delivery of braille (or other tactile) materials to the appropriate schools
  • Coordinate with TVI to prepare transcribed materials during the summer
  • Help with activities for the ongoing maintenance of the program for students with visual impairments
  • Creates tactile graphics of maps, charts, pictures, routes, and other tactile displays using various tools, materials, and machines
  • Collaborates with TVI and/or other professionals to gain knowledge and skill of instructional technology / tools used by students with visual impairment, including low vision devices, abacus, screen readers, etc. to best adapt educational materials to specific needs of the students
  • Manage time so as to complete transcriptions as they are needed by the TVI

Qualification Requirements

  • Associate's degree or minimum of 60 college hours
  • Enrollment in Literary Braille Transcription Course Upon Hire
  • Completion of Literary Braille Transcription Course within 18 months of start date
  • Minimum of 2 years Experience working within special education, specifically with students that have visual impairments, and/or experience with Braille translation, preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions, both oral and written
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent keyboarding skills
  • Proficiency in the use of software packages related to office operations

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
