INTRODUCTION
This position is housed within the Fort Peck Tribes’ Tribal Health Department (FPTH). The purpose of this position is to provide oversight to comprehensive eye care program and direct patient care.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Provides direct care to patients including diagnoses all optometric and ocular problems through external and internal physical evaluation of the eye and surrounding tissues; detects neuromuscular impairment or anomalies of binocular function; treats visual disorders through examination, prescription of corrective lenses, vision training and/or pharmacological means; treats unusual visual disorders through application of advanced and complex optometric techniques; performs minor surgical procedures (i.e. corneal and eyelid foreign body removal, small papilloma removal, suture removal, etc.).
- Refers patients requiring complex medical surgery or services to the appropriate medical specialty; refers patients to the appropriate health professional upon the diagnosis of ocular manifestations of systemic disease;receives referrals from other health professionals for continuing quality patient care; provides emergency eye services including diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic trauma or pathology on an outpatient or inpatient basis (i.e. treatment of corneal ulcers using pharmaceuticals, bandage contact lenses, surgical debridement, etc.), using proper infection control techniques (ie. standard precautions).
- Provides vision and eye care education and counseling to patients using appropriate, and culturally specific, brochures, video tapes, posters, eye models, etc.
- Provides programs such as Headstart, school vision, diabetic retinopathy, and community wide "health fair" screening programs; maintains liaison with and provides advisory eye services to other professional personnel on patients or program problems; provides optometric and eye specialty clinics; acts as community educator providing vision education and in-service training to other health professionals; develops and executes community clinics providing complete optometric care.
- Records all patient care examinations, assessment, procedures, and care plans in accordance with policy, procedures, and national standards.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Knowledge of optometry as acquired by completion of a state board approved concentrated ocular therapeutics course and/or the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease (TMOD) exam as offered by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. May demonstrate knowledge by completion of the requirements to be Board Certified by the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). Professional knowledge in the theory, diagnosis, treatment (therapeutic or optical therapy), and rehabilitation protocols of optometric care.
- Knowledge of physical and psychosocial assessment and history taking skills in order to perform and complete ocular examinations.
- Ability to interpret diagnostic tests and procedures and to analyze data in order to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings, communicate results and to identify all stages of ocular problems and make a diagnosis and implement or modify treatment.
- Knowledge of planning and developing a comprehensive patient care plan for the treatment of common and unusual visual and ocular conditions.
- Knowledge of prevention and eye health maintenance measures, ocular disease control activities, and early identification of ocular disease in order to provide patient education and counseling.
- Knowledge and application of all optometric/optical instrumentation.
- Knowledge of pharmacological agents and their use and will be required to maintain a full and unrestricted therapeutics license.
- Knowledge of emergency ocular treatment.
- Knowledge and ability necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Ability to identify and categorize each patient's age-specific grouping of needs, i.e., Infant, adolescent, or geriatric patients.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires intermittent standing, frequent driving trips, occasional workdays of greater than eight hours and moderate lifting.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed within clinical settings.
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from an accredited school of optometry in which the practice and science of optometry is taught in a course of study that is accredited by the Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry (ARBO).
- Must be licensed in Montana or be licensed and good standing in another state and have the ability to become licensed in Montana.
