Job Description

The Sr. Superintendent provides overall management of field operations to one or more projects, establishes field objectives and policies, safety, quality control and monitors construction and financial activities through the administrative direction of a Project Manager, as well as mentoring Project Superintendents, Sr. Field Engineers and Assistant Superintendents. The Sr. Superintendent is equal parts Builder and Businessperson. The Sr. Superintendent creates detailed schedules (before the project commences) for subcontractors, consultants, and vendors with a clear critical path to ensure timely project completion. Superintendents provide coordination and planning and ensure quality control for the work being performed at a job site. They also set the tone regarding the creation of a safe working environment on all Fortis projects.

A successful Sr. Superintendent is a self-directed, detail-oriented time manager who is comfortable with complex and/or fast-paced projects. They seek input and collaborate with other project members, and develop and inspire community among PMs, PEs, other superintendents, vendors, and consultants. Sr. Superintendents must have excellent decision-making skills. They must be able to relate to and effectively communicate with many different types of workers. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential in all areas of interaction. The Sr. Superintendent should be capable of successfully overseeing a single project on their own without support from other Supervisory roles.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in company proposals and project interviews to provide a clear understanding of project pursuits which will ensure customer satisfaction while fulfilling their superintendent responsibilities on their current project.
  • Provides detailed constructability reviews with the Fortis Preconstruction team during the preconstruction process.
  • Develop and manage project schedules including four-week look-ahead schedules and pull-planning efforts.
  • Implement plans to ensure all materials, equipment and inspections support the project schedule.
  • Develop, implement, and manage site logistic plans.
  • Effectively manage the utilization of Fortis tools and equipment
  • Supervise project partners (craft, subcontractors, vendors) and manage and track their task readiness, work progress, and quality of installation.
  • Provide high-level management of safety, quality and schedule/risk compliance for the project and team members.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and procedures, means and methods, sequencing, and/or safety protocol.
  • Responsible for the development of future field leaders at Fortis
  • Mentor a minimum of two Superintendents and/or Asst Superintendents at all times (regardless of if they are on their current project or not).
  • Conduct monthly check-ins with mentees on their development and progress
  • Assist in other duties as assigned, relevant to the achievement of the position’s and team’s objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Expertise reading blueprints and other construction documents.
  • 15 or more years of construction experience in a variety of sectors and a successful track record working with control and integration systems
  • 15 or more years of supervisory experience, leading large teams including Superintendents and/or Assistant Superintendents
  • Familiar with and proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Excel/Project/Word/Outlook)
  • Proficiency with scheduling software platforms, such as MS Project, Primavera P6
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and written with strong use of English language
  • Completion of OSHA 30
  • Has successfully managed a $25M project
  • Solution oriented and resolves issues with project team timely and effectively.
  • Seasoned in multiple construction types (i.e., Tenant Improvements, core and shell buildings, medical facilities, data centers, etc.) .
  • Has the ability to both understand the finite details of the project but also has the ability to elevate above the details and identify and mitigate risk on the project at a high level.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record in accordance to Fortis policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read and/or speak alternative languages (i.e., Spanish) is not required, but is beneficial

Physical Requirements

Work is performed on an active construction site. Role requires standing or walking for long periods of time. Utilize standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Communication with internal and external contacts, including speaking and hearing. May occasionally move equipment up to 50 lbs.

Travel Requirements

All Fortis positions require some level of driving.
