What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cadet - Marine Shipping - Deck and/or Engine - Seattle, WA position at Foss?
The primary duty of the cadet is to train and observe towing and other marine operations in a work study environment. This position also includes pulling heavy lines, climbing onto and walking on barges, boats and narrow barge walkways.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:At times the cadet may be called on to assist with making and breaking tow, lashing and rigging of cargo on barges, handling lines and wires, splicing, maintaining orderliness and cleanliness of the vessel, and other duties as directed by the Master/Chief Engineer. Must be familiar with and observe proper safety practices, procedures and routines. Must be familiar with emergency procedures including fire, man overboard, abandon ship and pollution response. One also may be required to serve as lookout at times when the vessel is navigating in reduced visibility.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:- Must be able to read, speak and understand English over the telephone and/or radio.
- Ability to communicate effectively with captain, co-workers, dispatchers and customers.
- Able to sail for 45 -90 days. Usual range: 30-70 days
- Able to work alongside crew for duration of voyage
- Able to work in variable weather conditions
- Able to follow instruction of Captain, Mates, and Chief Engineers
- Have basic knowledge and be able to practice/exhibit good seamanship
- Basic knowledge of nautical terminology
- Must be compliant with Company policies, including drug and alcohol, safety, etc.
United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential Possess a current Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) For international voyages -- must hold a current certification in STCW. Must be currently an active student with a maritime institution or academy.
CompensationThe pay for this position will be between $18.69/hr. - $20.00/hr.
