Seasonal - Lock Tender
Fox River Navigational System Authority (FRNSA) has maintained and operated the Fox River
Lock System since 2004. We have restored and preserved the heritage of one of the nation’s most
unique transportation systems. Of the 17 locks, 16 have been restored and 15 are operated each
season. The Fox Locks are a recreational, historic, and economic treasure in Northeast Wisconsin.
Visitors can see living history in action and use one of the only fully restored, hand-operated lock
systems in the United States, accessing the beautiful Lower Fox River. Thank you for your interest

We are looking for Seasonal Lock Tenders to form a dedicated Lock Tender Team. Work locations will
be at one or more of the locks which span nearly 39 miles of riverway from Appleton to De Pere. Our
navigational and seasonal work season is mid-May to the first part of October. During the navigation
season hours vary by location; Northern Locks are open seven days a week, Southern Locks are open
Saturdays and Sundays.
Lock Tenders are on the water representatives of The Fox Locks, an important first point of contact for
the public. Professional appearance and etiquette are expected. Uniform shirts will be issued and are
required to be worn. Additionally, Lock Tenders may be asked to work holidays such as (Memorial Day,
July 4, Labor Day) and will receive time and half pay for holidays worked. In severe weather conditions
lock tender shifts may be cancelled.
Overall Duties:
- Safely operate lock and valves
- Share historical information of the navigational system
- Remove debris from locks, lock doors and valves daily and as needed
- Pick up litter on lock property grounds, keep property in park like condition
- Wipe down handrails and broom off sidewalks and lock buildings
- Plant and tend to flower gardens
- Inspect lock and lock property for safety issues and sink holes
- Use provided mobile tablets for data entry
- Assist with storm clean up as needed
- Keep accurate records as needed
- Follow policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Possess the physical strength, agility and mobility to turn lock tripods, work the hand
operated valves and wheels required to operate the lock safely
- Able to work a flexible schedule
- Willing to work in variable weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications:
- A valid driver’s license.
Training will be provided to facilitate safe operation and maintenance of the locks. Lock Tenders
report to the Lock Tender Coordinator.
Hourly Wage Range: $16.50-20
Pay Frequency: Direct Deposit, Bi-weekly
Time Commitment:
Mid-May – Sept/October
Generally, between the hours of 10a - 9p
Potentially 16-40 hours week
Other Considerations:
This is a seasonal position, as such these positions do not automatically lead to or enjoy the same
benefits as permanent employees. Seasonal positions do offer valuable work experience. Seasonal
employees are limited to working 1039 hours within a twelve-month period.
Applicants must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin. Non-residents may apply but must meet
residency requirements upon hire. Employment may require the selected candidate to pass a background
check.
