Part-time Custodian

This is a Part-Time (20 hours or less per week) position with Franklin County.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities Operations, the custodian performs a variety of routine custodial tasks involving the care and cleaning of County building interiors, and minor maintenance work in an assigned area. Primary responsibility is for the use of proper methods, materials, and equipment in performing assigned duties, and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings or equipment. Work closely with Facilities Operation Manager as part of the building and grounds team. Takes initiative to work independently to accomplish tasks without direct supervision or oversight. Completes minor maintenance repairs as directed by supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Operates power-driven machinery, such as automatic scrubbers, vacuum sweepers, carpet shampoo machines, and buffers;
  • Uses common tools, such as a hammer, screwdriver and/or ladder to make minor repairs.
  • Moves paper products and janitorial supplies from one place to another using a hand truck;
  • Moves janitorial supplies and trash cans weighing up to 320 pounds, a distance of 50 feet, to/from stock rooms and disposes of trash in proper containers;
  • Cleans offices, windows, blinds/window coverings, mirrors, light fixtures, breakroom areas, and drinking fountains;
  • Works with cleaning fluids and chemicals using normal, routine, protective equipment to clean, sanitize, and deodorize break rooms, restrooms, and offices;
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, and waxes floors, baseboards, and walls; Vacuums, shampoos, and removes spots from carpets. Buffs floors as needed;
  • Polishes furniture and woodwork. Cleans and polishes brass;
  • Dusts and cleans offices, including dusting books, cabinets, shelves, and furniture;
  • Sweeps steps and sidewalks adjacent to buildings;
  • Cleans, sanitizes, deodorizes, and replenishes supplies in restrooms;
  • Sets up tables and chairs in preparation for meetings, conferences, and events;
  • Assists in moving office and building furniture and equipment;
  • Replaces light bulbs and air conditioning filters;
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, materials, and supplies, and requests replenishment of supplies when needed;
  • Maintains storage areas of cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and orderly manner in order to ensure the safety of staff and the public;
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship with public, contractors, staff and co-workers;
  • React productively to interruptions and changing conditions;
  • Independently performs and prioritizes work assignments to meet needs of organization;
  • Demonstrates tact, courtesy, and respect in communication and interaction with public, staff, and co-workers;
  • Empties and properly disposes of trash and recycling;
  • Cleans ashtrays and cigarette receptacles;
  • Cleans/maintains entrance way, sidewalks and stairwells to buildings;
  • Delivers products to offices as needed;
  • Knows location of all fire extinguishers;
  • Maintains and keeps in good repair all janitorial equipment;
  • Provides maintenance/care of memorials;
  • Maintains landscape of facilities, to include mow lawns, water, plant, and weed flower beds, etc.;
  • Provides general maintenance to interior/exterior of facilities, to include painting, caulking, etc.;
  • Assists with snow removal, maintenance of walkways and parking lots;
  • Washes and folds laundry;
  • Performs basic plumbing repairs such as unclogging sinks or toilets.

Knowledge Of

  • Materials, methods, and practices essential to the proper cleaning of buildings;
  • Cleaning materials and disinfectants, equipment and tools used in custodial work;
  • Operation and care of electric sweepers, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, mop wringers, washing machines, brooms, mops, cleaning fluids, waxes, and other cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment;
  • Established policies and procedures to respond to questions and requests for service;
  • Necessary safety precautions associated with cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment;
  • Providing quality customer service.

Skill In

  • Following safety practices and sanitary procedures; proper lifting techniques; rules, regulations, and procedures to properly dispose of cleaning fluids, and chemicals;
  • Prioritizing and performing multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Maintaining tools and equipment in clean, working order;
  • Using cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards;
  • Using related tools and machinery;
  • Taking initiative to accomplish tasks.

Ability To

  • Use tools required in custodial and minor maintenance work, including electrical cleaning equipment;
  • Be self-motivated and work independently in the absence of supervision;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, in fluent English both orally and in writing;
  • Read, listen, interpret, and apply directions/instructions from individuals, manuals and labels; particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products;
  • Perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, coworkers, and representatives from other County departments and the general public.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

  • Possess a valid Kansas Driver's license.

Required Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.;
  • three to six months related experience or training;
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • The employee must frequently push/pull carts, stock, or equipment weighing 320 pounds;
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.
  • Specific hearing abilities required by this job include ability to comprehend instructions/directions, to discern or detect changes in equipment, machines, etc.
  • Specific smelling abilities required by this job include ability to detect unpleasant or noxious odors, gases, or fumes.
