What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker II - Parks position at Franklin County, VA?
GENERAL DEFINITION
Performs responsible skilled work maintaining County facilities, grounds, parks, park equipment, park shelters/buildings and equipment. Responsible for proper use and maintenance of lawn equipment. May oversee part-time maintenance helpers and jail trustees. Supervision of some public events required. Maintains inventory and maintenance of park equipment and maintenance equipment; does related work as required.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Work is performed under general supervision of the Parks Superintendant and/or Parks System Manager or designee.
TYPICAL TASKS
- Maintain facilities, including but not limited to cutting grass, spreading fertilizer, litter control, clean restrooms, repair any broken items;

- Do regular routine maintenance and repairs of county owned vehicles, lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, and any other motorized tools;
- Maintain and repair non-motorized hand tools;
- Inventory all tools both motorized and hand;
- Dispense, repair and inventory all various equipment owned by the County;
- Supervise part-time maintenance people;
- Supervise trustees from the Franklin County Jail;
- Oversees use of facilities as assigned;
- Oversees maintenance of facilities as assigned;
- Operates trucks, tractors and other motorized equipment;
- Performs daily safety checks at facilities as needed;
- Install and maintain County street signs;
- Provides set up and take down of special County wide events;
- Performs other duties as may be assigned;
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of techniques and practices of grounds, building and equipment maintenance; skilled in use of hand, gasoline and electric powered tools and grounds maintenance equipment; ability to organize and keep inventory; ability to supervise; ability to work with people of various ages and interests; general knowledge of various activities related to County operations; ability to work in various weather conditions and during odd hours; extensive knowledge in turf management. Ability to work effectively while following safety protocols.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Considerable experience in buildings, grounds, field, and equipment maintenance required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED OBLIGATIONS
The successful applicant will possess and maintain a valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Note: Applicant must have and maintain a driving record acceptable to Franklin County and its insurance carrier(s). May be required to obtain licensure and or certification for pesticide application etc per OSHA regulations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Involves frequent walking and occasionally over rough or uneven terrains; lifting and carrying objects weighing 15-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds. Involves climbing ladders, stooping and crawling in confined spaces; Frequent operation of vehicles, shop and hand tools, requiring manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Exposes employee to potentially minor injuries, and infrequently, to adverse weather conditions. Regular contact is made with individuals from other internal organizational units and occasionally with the general public.
