What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary Special Education Assistant position at Franklin Public School District?
General Responsibilities:
- Work with individual students or small groups of students as directed to reinforce learning of material or skills.
- Supervise students in lunchroom, outside and other areas as assigned.
- Assist with clerical tasks.
- Be familiar with all classroom and school rules and procedures and provide assistance and direction to students in a positive but firm manner.
- Make discipline referrals when school rule violations occur.
- Willing to be trained to perform medical procedures such as care for diabetic students and administer Epi-pen. Etc.
Requirements Specific to Position:
- Assist in changing clothing and providing toileting needs.
- Lift 75 lbs or more.
- Demonstrate technological proficiency to assist with technological applications (speech to text/text to speech).
- Ability to promote independence and self-help skills.
- Current CPR certification and First Aid Training or commitment to obtain such upon request.
- Knowledge of autism or willingness to work with students with autism and learn behavioral management skills.
Qualifications:
Under the Every Student Succeeds Act, educational assistants working in Title 1 programs must demonstratecertain qualifications to be considered “Highly Qualified” and meet the requirements of the law.These qualifications can bedemonstrated by meeting one of the following:
- An Associate Degree (or higher)
- 2 years of post-secondary study (at least 48 credits)
- Proficiency on one of the state-selected assessments. Franklin Public Schools will use the ParaPro assessment. FPS will cover the cost of taking this assessment.
Additional Qualifications:
- Ability to exercise good judgment in firmly enforcing classroom and school rules.
- Position requires ability to move quickly, run, and restrain students, if necessary.
- Above average human relations skills, demonstrating effective verbal/written communications with students, staff, parents and others encountered on the job.
- Initiative and self-motivation to work independently.
- Ability to work in a positive manner and keep school matters confidential.
- Possesses the mathematics and language skills necessary to support student learning.
- Knowledge of technology including Google Docs, Microsoft Office
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable.
