Director of Accounting
Location: Virginia Beach, VA (Relocation assistance available)
A growing company seeks a Director of Accounting to strengthen accounting, internal audit, and treasury functions while serving as a key financial leader.
This role requires a self-starter with a strong financial background, problem-solving skills, keen attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Strong leadership and people management skills are essential, as this position will work closely with teams and executives across the organization.
The Director of Accounting reports directly to the Corporate Controller.
Job Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
- Contribute to the monthly financial close process, ensuring timely and accurate completion of account reconciliations, profit and loss (P&L) reviews, statement of cash flow creation, and variance analysis.
- Collaborate with the FP&A team to support financial planning and reporting.
Cash & Foreign Exchange (FX) Management
- Enhance cash flow management and intercompany process management.
- Monitor and mitigate foreign exchange exposure by implementing best practices.
Technical Accounting & Compliance
- Serve as the subject matter expert on U.S. GAAP, ensuring compliance with technical accounting standards and best practices.
Audit & Regulatory Compliance
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax authorities, and other regulatory bodies.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory reporting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Develop and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Establish and enforce policies and procedures to mitigate risks and improve operational efficiency.
System Optimization
- Continuously evaluate and enhance ERP and other accounting systems to drive operational efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
- 8 years of progressive leadership experience, including 3 years of public company or audit experience (Big 4 audit experience highly preferred).
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), information technology general controls (ITGCs), automated control environments, cybersecurity best practices, and technology risk management.
- Critical thinker with a drive for excellence and business insights.
- Self-starter with a continuous improvement mindset and a willingness to challenge the status quo.
- Ability to handle ambiguity and implement necessary structure where required.
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong technology and organizational skills, including experience with ERP/CRM systems and Microsoft Office, with high proficiency in Excel.
