Job Purpose: The Insurance Collections Specialist is responsible for managing and resolving outstanding insurance claims to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement. This role involves communicating with insurance companies, identifying issues delaying payment, and implementing corrective actions to optimize collections. The Insurance Collections Specialist will work collaboratively with the billing team to support the financial health of the organization.


Primary Responsibilities:
  • Claims Follow-Up:
    • Monitor and track unpaid insurance claims to ensure timely resolution.
    • Follow up on claims that require additional information or documentation.
  • Problem Resolution:
    • Investigate and resolve claim denials or rejections by insurance carriers.
    • Correct billing errors and resubmit claims as necessary.
  • Communication:
    • Contact insurance companies via phone, email, or online portals to resolve payment issues.
    • Communicate with patients regarding insurance coverage discrepancies or balances.
  • Compliance:
    • Ensure all collections activities comply with state and federal regulations.
    • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
    • Document all actions taken on accounts in the billing software.
    • Provide regular updates to the Billing Manager on the status of outstanding claims.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the billing and coding teams to identify trends in denials.
    • Assist with training new team members on insurance collection processes as needed.

Education and experience, degree and/or certification required (if applicable):
  • Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical billing, collections, or related field.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong understanding of insurance claim processes and reimbursement policies.
    • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) and billing software.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Certifications:
    • Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or similar certification preferred but not required.
