Job Overview
We have a new opportunity for a substantive 0.64 wte Band 8a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist within our Adult Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and innovative Physiotherapist, with significant critical care experience at a senior level.
The Cardiothoracic team provide specialist Physiotherapy input to a 21 bedded Critical Care Unit. The caseload can be complex and varied, including management of patients who are recovering from Cardiac and Thoracic surgeries, complex adult congenital, heart and lung transplantation (inclusive of ECMO/VAD support as indicated) We seek an enthusiastic, dynamic and innovative Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist who is able to provide expertise across the four pillars of advanced practice, and can support the Physiotherapy team to deliver best quality of care to this complex patient group.
The postholder will be supported by an Operational Lead Physiotherapist, and will have peer support from Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist working across neighbouring Critical Care areas within the trust. The successful postholder will be supported by the Band 7’s within the team in relation to day- to- day operational management, allowing the focus of this post to be enabling quality and service development.

Main duties of the job
- To be an active member of the physiotherapy team delivering a service to critical care
- To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced knowledge and skill within critical care physiotherapy including the integration of research evidence into practice via the process of expert clinical reasoning and decision-making.
- To carry a clinical caseload of highly complex critical care patients.
- To be an active member of the regional and national speciality networks e.g. ACPRC, ICS.
- To be responsible for own continued professional development.
- To maintain an excellent knowledge within cardiorespiratory to use highly advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to plan and deliver the best service.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- To be an expert practitioner in all aspects of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy and critical care physiotherapy management, developing an advanced level of professional autonomy and accountability in the provision of such care.
- To promote Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust as national leaders in the speciality of critical care physiotherapy and as an international centre of excellence.
- To lead in partnership with POD leads on developments and innovations in critical care within the Trust and with relevant external agencies, locally and nationally, in line with the Trust’s commitment to clinical governance, develop, lead and implement standards for clinical audit to evaluate clinical effectiveness and promote clinical excellence within critical care physiotherapy. To have a role in the development of multi-professional service development within the field of critical care.
- To provide expert clinical leadership through teaching, supervision, advice, guidance and information to the Trust wide critical care physiotherapy team, other health care professionals, carers and relatives and other nonprofessional across the Trust and Partnership Organisations.

Essential criteria
- Hold a degree or equivalent diploma in Physiotherapy
- Hold an MSc or have relevant critical care postgraduate training to MSC level and be prepared to study for MSc whilst in post
- Be state registered with the health professions council
- Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
- Involvement in the relevant CSP Clinical Special Interest Group e.g. APCRC, ICS
- Completion of accredited advanced ventilation course
- CUSIC accreditation for lung ultrasound

- Be able to demonstrate considerable critical care and cardiorespiratory experience at post graduate level
- To have expert knowledge of the current evidenced research, quality improvement and experience of involvement national audit
- Have highly specialist knowledge of manual handling legislation and current best practice including range of appropriate equipment
- To be responsible for and actively participate in the in-service training programme within the speciality area
- To be involved in the promotion of physiotherapy outside the service e.g. within the directorate ensuring that physiotherapy is incorporated into any new developments and linking with regional and national Critical Care services
- Knowledge of current NHS initiatives e.g. National Policy Drivers
