Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and leading organisations in the country for clinical trial activity involving medicinal products. Pharmacy has a key role in ensuring that clinical trial medications are handled safely and in line with UK legislation.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated Pharmacist to join the Pharmacy team. This post will be an integrated post working within the clinical team and the clinical trials team for cancer services. With the increase in advanced therapies within clinical trials and cancer services, this post will provide support and advice to both teams and enable smooth transition for these medicines from clinical trials into standard patient care.
You will manage the clinical trials team within cancer services to ensure compliance with UK legislative practices and Trust/departmental SOPs relating to clinical trials. You will be expected to contribute to audit of services both clinical and clinical trials related and act on the outcomes of these audits to change practice to improve services where appropriate. You will contribute to promoting cost-effective prescribing strategies and financially monitor drug usage within a specified area providing reports on this when necessary.

As well as in-house training within the Pharmacy Clinical Trials unit, you will be required to attend an initial Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course and subsequent refreshers. You and will be based at the Clinical Trials Unit at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (Freeman Hospital). However, you may be required to work at one of the other Pharmacy Clinical Trials units within the Trust which include the main Pharmacy Department (Freeman site) and The Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). You will report to the Senior lead Clinical Trials Pharmacist and the Senior Lead Clinical Pharmacist – Cancer Services. You will be accountable to the Senior lead Clinical Trials Pharmacist (Trust-wide).
It is essential that you either hold an independent prescriber qualification or are committed to undertaking this qualification when required to do so.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
You will be expected to provide highly specialist advice and recommendations to other healthcare staff via telephone, e-mail and face-to-face.
- To manage and provide the Pharmacy Clinical Trial Service for the Freeman Hospital (FH) and its elements including the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC), ensuring compliance with the EU Clinical Trials Directive and Trust Research Governance Policies. To organise and develop clinical pharmacy services in cancer services incorporating advanced therapies both within the clinical trial and standard of care setting.
- To ensure that the training of a wide variety of pharmacy and other staff on how to handle information on Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs) is carried out in accordance with Trust guidelines and National Legislation / Guidance.
- To audit compliance with the Medicines Management Committee, Formulary and Hospital Trust recommendations across identified areas within the Trust.
- To conduct and dispense medicines, professionally, effectively and promptly.
- To participate in Trust wide meetings regarding management and organisation of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service within the Trust.
- To undertake and agreed prescribing role within an appropriately agreed clinical area.
- To participate in HRA pharmacy technical reviews where appropriate.
- To perform the professional role of a Registered Pharmacist, including advice, supervision and co-operation with colleagues, particularly in relation to support/cover for absent colleagues.

- Clinical Diploma (or equivalent higher qualification)
- Independent Prescriber qualification or commitment to enter into the next intake for obtaining the qualification
