Job Overview

A new opportunity has arisen within the Newcastle Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) for the position of a Clinical Trial Assistant based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The CRDC will be a new innovative team starting in April 2025 and this gives an exciting opportunity to join at the onset of its development.

We are looking to appoint an individual who has excellent communication skills, can multitask, has meticulous attention to detail and can work proactively and cohesively within this small friendly team. The post holder will support the development and implementation of clinical research trials by providing support to the team to ensure the smooth set-up and delivery of the studies across the Hub and Spokes.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure the provision of safe and effective patient care.
  • Support for Clinical Trial Coordinators and Research Nurses.
  • Support and contribute to the delivery of research participant care and nursing practice in an agile capacity across the Hub and Spokes.
  • Contribute to the Trust’s projects and wider research delivery projects where required.
  • Maintain a high standard of care and have the necessary skills such as venepuncture, ECG – or be willing to obtain these skills.
  • Ensure compliance with NUTH policies and procedures and adhere to the Clinical Governance Framework and Good Clinical Practice.
  • Liaise with members of the Multidisciplinary Team e.g. Principal Investigators, Sub Investigators, and Pharmacists.
  • Ability to plan own workload daily.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Use NIHR/NHS systems to support in set up and delivery of clinical trials.
  • Undertake training for each individual study’s electronic databases.

  • Stock control of study equipment and office supplies.
  • As the nature of this role is agile, a valid UK Driving Licence would be desirable.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Following a successful bid to the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Newcastle Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) has been set to support the delivery of commercial studies through the region. Newcastle CRDC will be one of 15 CRDC’s based in England and 4 CRDC’s in the devolved nations.

The core aim of the CRDC will be to increase the amount of commercial research studies in the North- East (NE) and to ensure that more people and including those from diverse communities are able to take part in research. This is an exciting opportunity to join the CRDC team and support the growing development of the CRDC research delivery team. There will be opportunity to deliver studies across the network and to support the development of innovation in research delivery in a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model. The Newcastle CRDC will facilitate research delivery in the Hub at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Research Unit and into the Spokes. The Spokes include both Primary and Secondary Care, covering the geographical area between Durham and Berwick and across to Carlisle.

The research that will be conducted will be very diverse and will overall cover most major medical and surgical specialties with a focus on research into treatments for chronic conditions that effect the NE population. This will include treatments for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. In addition, it is expected that the CRDC will work with companies developing medical devices and diagnostics.

The CRDC will identify and prioritise research that can be delivered through its Hub and Spoke Model with an aim to create an agile research delivery team. The team will consist of a Senior Sister, a Junior Sister, Research Nurses, Clinical Trial Assistants, a Clinical Fellow and General Practitioners.

The post holder will play a key role in ensuring that departmental research activities are undertaken in line with current research governance regulations. This is an ideal opportunity for those working in a healthcare role who may want to develop their career and will include excellent opportunities for personal and professional development. Previous research experience is desirable but not essential as full inhouse training will be provided.

  • Coordinate and improve trial communication throughout Multi-Disciplinary Teams throughout the Trust
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professional to ensure service delivery
  • Communicates effectively with research team and study participants and their family members. Is able to provide patients with information, which may be complex or sensitive, regarding their participation in the clinical trial and the care that they will receive as a consequence of that
  • Facilitate the recruitment of research participants in to low risk research studies, which is likely to include quality of life and tissue sample collection studies
  • Support the research delivery team to successfully deliver a broad ranging portfolio of clinical trials
  • Coordinate and supervise housekeeping duties and ordering of all clinical trial supplies
  • Co-ordinate the collection transfer and storage of blood / tissue samples in accordance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 as required by trial protocol

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

  • NVQ level 4 or equivalent qualification or NVQ level 3 and an ability to demonstrate significant experience relevant to role

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of caring for patients in a professional setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of the Trust’s confidentiality procedures (Data Protection Act, Caldicott guidelines)

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of any education related training programs pertaining to clinical trials
  • Experience of using NHS patient management systems
  • Knowledge regarding the mandatory standard regarding conduction/construction of clinical trials (to include ICH GCP, UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research etc.)

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to coordinate collection of data to agreed timescales
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate well (written and verbally)
  • Strong IT skills, specifically in database management and microsoft excel

Desirable criteria

  • Venepuncture skills
