Job Summary

Lead the Static Engineering Group in the Facilities Engineering Department, reporting to the Facilities Engineering Manager in the FLNG Engineering Organization. This role will lead a team of Static Engineers and other applicable SME’s in the development and monitoring of static/fixed equipment strategies for FLNG as well as stewardship of the static equipment design of the facility, while providing technical support to the operations and maintenance teams. This includes program development and utilization of best available technologies to advance a best in class static, integrity management and risk based inspection program.

To include development of processes and engineering standards defining associated inspection intervals, material selection, torque values/specificiations, NDE technology and utlimately act with the FLNG Technical Authority (TA) designation for static equipment (including piping) and metallurgical engineering. Provide oversight of the ongoing static equipment monitoring and inspection program in collaboration with operations, maintenance and regulatory stakeholders. This position will lead (directly and indirectly) across the organization to mentor and direct members in the static engineering function.


Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for operations and maintenance, which includes material selection, de-rate conditions, MAOP calculations and/or evaluation of material defects including wall thickness reductions.
  • Static equipment engineering support for daily plant operations.
  • Pipeline stress analysis as required (project/construction activities, road crossings, pipeline crossings, etc.)
  • Assess structural loads, stress analysis and perform fitness-for-service assessments of static equipment, testing programs and equipment strategies. Collaborate with operations and maintenance to develop and recommend repair and/or mitigation strategies as required.
  • Complete required material selection and review of contractor material recommendations.
  • Act as Technical Authority regarding the application of various industry codes and standards (e.g. ASME, API, PHMSA) and maintain updated company specifications and standards.
  • Ensure that modifications or additions to the facility meet applicable codes and standards and are executed according to industry best practice.
  • Equipment strategy and maintenance plan development, leadership and continuous improvement.
  • Use data from systems such as SAP, PI, SCADA, etc. to enable more advanced optimization of work scope, cost/benefit, frequency, etc.
  • Support long range planning and repair prioritization initiatives as they relate to the site's static equipment and fixed equipment integrity programs.
  • Analyze issues identified during inspection programs, to include development of mitigation strategies with respect to materials issues (corrosion, cracking, etc.).
  • Update equipment strategies in accordance with best industry practice utilizing test and inspection data. Further, update Engineering Standards to define equipment static and metallurgical requirements.
  • Deliver process and programs to allow for inspection data to be better integrated into and accessed from the best available software and technologies.
  • Develop and maintain NDT/NDE procedures to ensure compliance with company specifications and RAGAGEP pertaining to piping, pressure vessels, and tanks.
  • Collect data for regulatory reports, key performance indicators, engineering surveillance health monitoring tasks.
  • Failure analysis and recommendations regarding laboratory testing, engineering assessments and recommendations based on associated findings.
  • Responsible for supporting regulatory compliance in regard to FLNG static equipment through collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, Regulatory, and Legal Functions.
  • Assess maintenance and third-party inspection findings and provide condition clear recommendations following associated industry standards and internal requirements.
  • Participate and/or lead root cause analysis involving static equipment.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers in the areas of static and metallurgical engineering.
  • Communicate static equipment strategy and health KPIs to senior management.


Essential Functions

Minimum Qualification/Work Experience

Minimum Education Required:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and/or Materials Engineering.


Minimum Experience Required:

Minimum of 15 years' mechanical or metallurgical engineering specific to static equipment in an industrial setting. Preferably related to cryogenic, petrochemical, natural gas and/or other similar types of hydrocarbon processing. Practical experience with cryogenic mechanisms of fatigue and failure.

Strong experience with inspection, testing and maintenance program development. Including risk-based inspection and associated program development.

Minimum of 5 years leading and managing a team of engineering direct reports. To include coaching, mentoring and direction for continuous personnel improvement.

Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting an operating industrial facility.



Preferred Education:

Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical an/or Materials Engineering.

Preferred Experience:

20 years of Static Engineering. Preferably related to cryogenic, LNG, petrochemical, natural gas and/or other similar types of hydrocarbon processing.

Support for a large scale LNG operating facility.

Professional Engineer (PE) License or equivalent CEng license

  • Ability to work autonomously and be self-motivated/focused on achieving business results.
  • Ability to adapt, innovate, and continuously learn, knowing when to ask for assistance and support.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with diverse and multidisciplinary teams with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication to create clarity on issues, priorities, and team deliverables.


HSE Roles and Responsibilities

Support the policies, efforts, and programs of Freeport LNG HS&E Management System, including implementation of RAGAGEP requirements for fixed assets. Actively participates in application of HS&E Management System Policies, including Management of Change. Ensure that HS&E concerns are given priority in all activities completed within their area of responsibility. Implement routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions.

Working Conditions and Physical Expectations

Location/Travel Information

This position is based primarily at the Quintana Island Liquifaction Facility (LQF) with support to other off-site locations in the Freeport area as required. Occasional travel to vendor facilities or engineering offices may be required. This position requires the incumbent to hold a valid, unexpired driver license at all times in order to perform the essential functions of the job.


Work Environment

  • Primarily operates in a professional office environment within or adjacent to a hydrocarbon process plant. Sometimes operates in a control room, field equipment room, machine enclosure, or process plant field environment.
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers/photocopiers w/scanner and fax, and filing cabinets.
  • Routinely uses typical office, control room, & field communications equipment such as computers, hand-held devices, phones, videoconferencing devices, and radios.
  • Must be able to wear all necessary PPE equipment to perform job functions, including Fire Resistant Clothing, and hearing protection, where required.
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Not necessarily protected from weather and temperature changes. Possible exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy weather conditions.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical equipment and electrical circuits.
  • Exposure to constant, or intermittent sounds of a pitch level sufficient to cause marked distraction.

  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. as required in order to lift files, boxes and office equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending, standing on a stool, or climbing as necessary to perform these functions.
  • Ability to drive to other Company work locations as required.
  • Ability to move throughout all areas of the facility.
  • Stand and/or sit continuously and perform job functions for a full shift.
  • The incumbent is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Physically able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, lift, push, pull, climb, balance, crouch, handle and move items weighing up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Visual acuity corrected to perform job functions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this role, the incumbent will be required to talk and hear.
  • May be required to enter confined spaces.
  • May be required to work at elevated heights.
