POSITION: BODY SHOP PAINTER

Job Objective: The Body Shop Painter is responsible for preparing and applying paint to vehicles, trailers and other parts to restore their appearance, ensuring the highest quality of work while adhering to safety protocols and company standards. The Body Shop Painter covers both the technical and operational aspects of the position, ensuring the painter consistently performs high-quality work and contributes to the overall success of the body shop.

Reports to: General Manager

Key Responsibilities:

1. Surface Preparation:

• Clean, sand, and smooth vehicle or trailer surfaces to prepare for painting.

• Mask areas that should not be painted (e.g., windows, trim, and tires).

• Remove any rust, dents, or imperfections before painting.

2. Paint Application:

• Mix and match paint to ensure a perfect color match for the vehicle.

• Apply primer, base coat, and clear coat using spray guns or other equipment.

• Ensure even, smooth coverage, avoiding drips, runs, or streaks.

3. Color Matching:

• Utilize tools and techniques to match paint colors accurately with the original vehicle color or customer specifications.

• Test the paint mixture to confirm the right shade before application.

4. Quality Control:

• Inspect paint jobs for quality and consistency in color and finish.

• Perform touch-ups as needed and ensure the final finish is free of defects.

• Ensure paint layers are applied uniformly and meet both manufacturer and company standards for durability and appearance.

5. Safety and Cleanliness:

• Follow safety guidelines, including the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, masks, gloves, and goggles.

• Maintain a clean work environment and ensure equipment is kept in good working order.

• Handle hazardous materials (e.g., paint, chemicals & byproducts) responsibly, ensuring proper storage and disposal.

6. Collaboration:

• Communicate with the Body Shop Team (management, technicians, repair staff, etc.) to ensure a smooth workflow.

• Provide updates to management regarding the progress of paint jobs.

7. Equipment Maintenance:

• Maintain and clean painting equipment, including spray guns and other tools.

• Report any malfunctioning or damaged equipment to management for repair.

8. Documentation:

• Digitally record materials used, paint codes, and other details related to each job.

• Ensure proper documentation for warranty and quality control purposes.

Minimum Entry Level Qualifications:

• Proven experience in automotive painting or related field.

• Knowledge of color mixing and matching.

• Familiarity with different types of paint and their applications.

• Ability to work with spray guns, air compressors, and other painting equipment.

• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work.

• Good physical condition and ability to work in a standing position for extended periods.

• Understanding of safety protocols and proper handling of chemicals.

• Good communication skills and ability to collectively work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certification in auto body painting or related technical training.

• Previous experience working as a painter in a heavy truck body shop.
