The Fremont Public Library is seeking an energetic, tech-savvy, and friendly Library Assistant to deliver excellent customer service to patrons in our community. We are a large district library with the culture, service model, and community support of a neighborhood library.
The primary responsibilities of this position include assisting patrons of all ages with locating and requesting materials, providing basic troubleshooting for library technology (printers, copiers, fax machines, etc.), greeting and directing patrons, and providing basic Help Desk services (including registering patrons for programs, handing out craft kits, and answering reference questions). If you are enthusiastic about working with the public and have a strong interest in reading, watching movies and TV, or listening to music, this position would be an excellent fit.
This position is year-round, part-time non-exempt, and regularly scheduled 16 hours per week.
The current schedule we seek to fill is Mondays 5pm-9pm Tuesdays 5pm-9pm, Wednesday 5pm-9pm, and Sundays 1-5pm. However, schedules may vary due to library needs, and this employee may be scheduled anytime the library is open including nights and weekends.
$16-18 per hour depending on qualifications.

General Job Description:
Provides patrons with program and meeting room assistance, answers general library questions, restocks displays and promotional materials, and shelves and straightens materials.
Duties:
- Provides general and directional information about the library, its collection, programs and services, and uses good judgment in referring patrons to librarians when needed.
- Signs people up for programs and study rooms
- Uses the PowerPAC to assist with basic materials questions
- Assists with basic questions regarding library apps
- Assists patrons with copying, printing, WiFi access and other library devices.
- Monitors programs, assists with library-led classes, and helps set-up and take-down any equipment or materials needed for the program.
- Reports issues of programs and passes along compliments about them to the program’s coordinator.
- Retrieves, shelf-reads, and shelves materials.
- Re-stocks library displays and replenishes bibliographies & bookmarks.
- Assists librarians in the department with clerical parts of weeding.
- Assists with decorations and library displays.
- Helps straighten and clean-up the department at end of shift.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as needed.
Organizational Relationships:
- Reports directly to the Department Manager.
- Works under the supervision of Librarians who coordinate programs.
- Works with Librarians when helping with clerical projects as approved by the Manager.
Qualifications:
- High school degree or equivalent.
- Personal computer fluency in Microsoft Office in a Windows environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in searching the Internet and using apps and mobile devices.
- Friendly and patient, with an enthusiasm for working with the public.
- Willing and able to speak in front of an audience to introduce a performer.
- Able to consistently follow directions with multiple steps.
- Self-motivated and willing to learn.
Physical Requirements:
- Manual: enough to operate computer keyboard and mouse.
- Visual: able to detect color coding, read documents and a computer screen.
- Communication: Fluent in English, both written and oral. Able to speak and be heard and hear the speech of co-workers and patrons in person and over the phone.
- Mobile: for up to 2 hours at a time:
- Bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling and twisting to retrieve and place objects from place to place.
- Grasping using the entire hand and arm strength to carry & place objects.
- Reaching above shoulder to place, shift, and retrieve materials on high shelves. Possibly standing on a step stool to reach higher than normal arm-reach.
- Light lifting and carrying: raising and/or moving objects between 5-25 pounds.
- Pushing/pulling a cart on wheels weighing as much as 100 pounds.
- Repetitive motion of hands, arms, legs, and torso.
