Canal Maintenance Worker
Position Summary
Under direction of the Foreman the Canal Maintenance Worker will be responsible for the activities within the maintenance department. Responsibilities include a wide variety of highly skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled work connected with the field construction and maintenance activities of an irrigation system; to operate a variety of light, medium, and heavy power-driven equipment used in the construction and maintenance of an irrigation system.
Supervision Responsibility
For: No direct reports. To: Reports to the Maintenance Foreman.
Essential/Primary Responsibilities
· Pour concrete structures for headgates, canal lining, diversions, and bridges;
· Lay and repair concrete and plastic pipe;
· Place new and repaired water control gates, diversions, and meter boxes;
· Repair leaks in pipelines;
· Build, place, knock and turn forms;
· Mow, rake (and otherwise clean and clear) canal banks;
· Break up concrete and place rip-rap;
· Spray and burn weeds;
· Place and operate pumps;
· Operate, and clean service vehicle and other specialized equipment;
· Prune trees and repair fences;
· Stocks truck with necessary tools, supplies, and equipment;
· Perform tasks involving rough carpentry, fabrication (including welding), and concrete finishing;
· Operate and perform field repair on special purpose machinery and equipment.
- Follow Federal, state and local safety regulations; plans, policies, and operating procedures.
- Perform additional tasks or responsibilities as dictated by operational necessity and as assigned.
Experience and Education Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma (preferred)
- California driver's license (Class C). (Official current driving record from DMV required.)

Licensing: Possession and retention of a valid Class "A" driver's license issued by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles is required or ability to obtain within seven months from date of hire at CMW A & B levels; Class C at CMW C and Utility Worker; and California Commercial Applicator Certification at CMW A & B levels.
If an employee does not meet or fails to maintain the licensing required, they will be given six months to obtain the licensing. If licensing is not obtained, the employee will be reclassified to the next applicable lower classification.
Skills and Abilities
· Basic mathematics, principles of basic civil engineering (including hydraulics, surveying, and drafting);
· Knowledge of blueprints and profiles; basic mechanical and electrical operation of machines;
· Techniques employed in construction, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and appurtenances;
· Operate wheel tractors; slopers; mowers; fork lifts; stationary cranes; mobile telescoping boom cranes; air blowers; generators; trucks and trailers; weed burners; spray rigs; power saws, hammers, shredders, and grinders; arc and acetylene welders; sprayers; concrete mixers; and use a wide variety of hand tools;
· Anticipate problems relating to construction and maintenance activities (including development and implementation of solutions);
· Maintain cooperative working relations with other personnel and the general public;
· Exercise appropriate methods of communication including reading and writing instructions;
· Minimize and, where possible, eliminate exposure of personnel to health and accident hazards.
· Work above ground (up to 40 feet) and in excavations.
· Effectively demonstrate the application of all skills, knowledge, and aptitudes required to carry out the duties and responsibilities cited above.
· Ability to effectively receive and disseminate information (including oral and written reports).
· Contribute to team environment and a positive culture.
- Ability to incorporate safe practices into the performance of job duties.
Working Conditions
This position is based in Lindsay. Requirements include working indoors and year-round outdoor environment. It will occasionally require irregular hours and travel. This position requires the employee to work in sometimes hazardous conditions; some of which include:
· Perform very heavy manual labor in connection with digging, lifting, climbing, etc.
· Working solitary shifts, irregular/extended hours, evening and weekend work.
· Work near swift flowing water and slippery surfaces and near road traffic.
· Exposure to extreme temperatures, heat, cold, damp, rain, dust, and fog.
· Confined space, cramped, awkward, and in uncomfortable positions.

Pay: $19.54 - $28.85 per hour
