What are the responsibilities and job description for the Housing Stabilization Advocate position at Friends of Yates?
Objective: Provide advocacy to victim/survivors who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless by assisting them in maintaining or obtaining safe, stable permanent housing.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
· The Housing Stabilization Advocate coordinates housing stability advocacy assists survivors with applying for local public or income-based housing through Kansas City, Housing Authority or private landlords.
· Provide education and services to include, savings accounts budgeting, debt reduction, credit repair and other services to obtain financial sustainability and avoid returning to homelessness.
· Provide life skills education as well as coupon use, shopping skills, cooking, nutrition, housekeeping, and using public transportation as well as a housing plan to get them re-housed into safe permanent housing.
· Refer clients to other agencies and mainstream community resources and advocate directly with other agencies as needed to help client access necessary services.
· Maintain service partnerships with referral agencies.
· Conduct shelter client assessments and intakes. Orientate clients to shelter and shelter guidelines.
· Assure that appropriate shelter guidelines are practiced.
· Assist clients in identifying and fulfilling personal and service needs.
· Comply with all agency policies and safety procedures.
· Document shelter happenings and client activities, as necessary.
· Provide transportation to survivors for housing, medical, mental health, and court appointments to address immediate health and safety concerns.
· Maintain confidentiality of all participants’ personal information and identity.
· Oversee shelter environment and activities, facilitate problem solving for in-house conflicts and
crises encourage and model appropriate shelter interactions. Mediate on behalf of residential
clients when appropriate.
· Provide appropriate follow-up and documentation of emergency incidents or non-compliance of shelter guidelines.
· Attend staff meetings, staff development trainings and support staff in their development and training and submit reports as required.
· Provide any and all shelter support as directed by Supervisor Program Director, Executive Director or Chief Executive Officer.

Qualifications:
· A Bachelor’s Degree in human services or related field or equivalent work or volunteer experience and training preferred.
· Must work well with persons of varied sexual preference, racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds, and with individuals who are differently-abled.
· Awareness of relationship violence, child abuse, stalking, and sexual abuse and assault preferred.
· Knowledge of counseling and advocacy techniques for people who have been victims of domestic violence, including crisis intervention and case management skills beneficial.
· Previous employment or volunteer work in human services, community agencies or other related nonprofit or social change organizations a plus.
· Good oral and written communication and computer skills are required.
· Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaker preferred but not required.
· Position requires the ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends and on-call scheduling.
