Job Description
Job Summary:
The role of the Pastor of Adult Discipleship and Engagement at First Southern is to assist the Senior Pastor in overseeing and implementing the vision and mission of FSBC. While building and implementing systems & strategies for adult discipleship, this pastor will play a central role in promoting spiritual growth, education, and a strong sense of community among adults. This role also focuses on building meaningful connections with church visitors and connecting them to various areas of life within the church body. Through a balance of discipleship and outreach efforts, this pastor will connect adults within the church while reaching out to the surrounding community and sharing Christ’s love.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In the area of Adult Discipleship, this Pastor is
- Responsible for (but not limited to) equipping and empowering members to be as active as possible in the work of the church body.
- Lead and oversee all key discipleship initiatives of the church, including small groups, and engage in activities that help members grow and mature in their faith.
- Identify and cultivate relationships with people who demonstrate a passion and giftedness for ministry.
- Recruit, train, and support leaders and volunteers for discipleship groups, ensuring they are well-prepared and encouraged.
- Maintain membership and small group attendance records.
- Responsible for monitoring and administering the annual discipleship ministries budget.
- Design and lead programs supporting adults' spiritual growth, such as Bible studies, small groups, classes, and mentoring relationships.
- Occasionally, organize retreats, seminars, and/or workshops that offer adults opportunities for deeper learning, reflection, and personal growth.
In the area of Church Engagement,
- Facilitate relationships among current FSBC members, regular attendees, and visitors.
- Develop a culture of connection and create pathways for adults to get involved in the church's life, including through volunteer roles, mission projects, and life/fellowship groups.
- Create programs and events that encourage meaningful relationships and active participation within the church body.
- Create strategies to help new members and visitors feel welcomed and integrated into the church's life, guiding them toward the next steps in their spiritual journey.
- Assist with the leadership, structure, and recruitment for the FSBC Membership Matters Class.
- Design a system for all guest services, follow-up, and other activities that ensures everyone has a great first impression of FSBC.
- Engage with and help coordinate outreach initiatives.

- Growing relationship with Jesus Christ evidenced by action, attitude, and behavior. Possess strong belief in and extensive knowledge of God’s word. Demonstrate application of God’s word in daily living and counseling of others. Demonstrate a lifestyle and family life consistent in word and practice with the teaching of Jesus Christ. Consistently meet and strive to maintain the leadership character qualifications outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1‐7 (qualifications for overseers).
- Be an ordained minister of the Gospel.
- Meet the qualifications of an elder as outlined in the scripture (1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1).
- Have experience in and zeal for the work or pastoral ministry.
- Be able to work on a team toward specific goals in a mutually edifying and supportive manner.
- Be reliable, take initiative, and be self-motivated.
- Embrace and adapt to growth, change, innovation, and creativity.
- Use appropriate judgment in the areas of discretion, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
- Have a cooperative, healthy, and motivating relationship with supervisors, co-workers, and volunteers.
- Be intentional and relational in engaging and loving the church family.
- Perform counseling services as time permits and conduct regular family ministry events.
- Conduct weddings, funerals, and other pastoral functions as the Senior Pastor directs.
- Have weekly conversations with people that require reliance on the Holy Spirit to turn toward spiritual conversations.
- Live missionally in order to impact lostness in our city and around the world.
- Keep the Senior Pastor well-informed of administrative and ministry developments.
- Fully embrace the mission, vision, and values of FSBC
- Maintain a teachable and open attitude.
- Commit to the Statement of Faith, Ministry Values, and Core Values as stated in the Bylaws of FSBC.
- Participate in the general pastoral care of FSBC.
- Become a member of FSBC as soon as practicable after joining the staff.
