POSITION OVERVIEW:
The corrections recovery coach plays a crucial role in providing peer recovery support services (PRSS) and supporting individuals with opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders in a jail setting. This position draws from their own lived experiences of overcoming addiction and incarceration to connect with and inspire individuals undergoing similar challenges. They offer empathy, understanding, and encouragement, aiming to motivate positive change and sustained recovery. Recovery coaching may involve goal setting, coping strategies, re-entry support, and assistance in accessing relevant resources, all within the context of the unique challenges present in a jail environment. The corrections recovery coach must agree to adhere to a confidentiality agreement and demonstrate passion for Full Circle’s mission and core values, including the concept of ensuring that recovery comes first.
This is a non-exempt position and is based on a 40-hour work week. The corrections recovery coach may work occasional evenings or weekends as determined by the CRCP Director and the needs of the local recovery community. This position is grant-funded through the Polk County Opioid Settlement Fund Supports For People With Lived Experience Grant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Peer Support and Mentorship
· Offer peer recovery support services to individuals in jail who are dealing with opioid use and other substance use challenges.
· Engage in recovery coaching with incarcerated individuals who will transition back to Polk County.
· Practice appropriate self-disclosure of personal recovery experiences to inspire and motivate individuals to seek positive change.
Assessment and Goal Setting
· Utilize and implement evidence-based practices to determine individual needs to assist with goal setting.
· Collaborate with individuals to set realistic and achievable recovery goals.
· Collect and enter data into the organization’s data system, assist with reporting and continuous program improvement.
Individualized Recovery Plans
· Develop individualized recovery plans tailored to each person's unique circumstances and goals.
· Provide guidance on accessing relevant resources and services within the jail and upon release.
· Support and encourage multiple pathways of recovery, including harm reduction strategies.
Advocacy and Education
· Advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals with substance misuse or mental health challenges within the jail system.
· Educate individuals on available treatment options, recovery resources, coping strategies, and self-advocacy.
Collaboration with Providers
· Coordinate with other healthcare professionals, counselors, and providers, internally and externally, to ensure a holistic approach to recovery.
· Maintain collaborative relationships with jail staff and providers to provide the most meaningful and effective peer recovery support services for recoverees.
Documentation and Reporting
· Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions and progress.
· Prepare reports on individual outcomes and contribute to program evaluation.
Re-entry Planning
· Assist individuals in developing reentry plans that address housing, employment, and ongoing support post-release.
· Connect individuals with community resources to enhance their chances of successful reintegration, including peer recovery support services at the Full Circle Recovery Community Center.
Self-Care and Professional Development
· Engage in ongoing training and professional development to stay informed about best practices in recovery coaching on topics such as ethics, boundaries, communication skills, recovery principles, and understanding of addiction and multiple pathways of recovery.
· Practice self-care to maintain personal well-being and resilience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Personal experience with substance use disorder, mental health conditions, recovery, and/or justice system involvement preferred.
· Knowledge of, or personal experience with, recovery systems, medication-assisted treatment, multiple pathways of recovery, harm reduction, criminal justice systems, person-centered approaches, and peer recovery support services preferred.
· Relevant education or experience working with individuals in recovery from substance misuse and/or mental health conditions preferred.
· Familiarity with the criminal justice system and an understanding of the challenges faced by individuals in correctional settings preferred.
· Knowledge of community resources and referral sources preferred.
· Must agree to complete the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy, Ethical Considerations for Recovery Coaches, and Recovery Coaching in Justice Settings within six months of hire.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with individuals in the jail setting.
· Ability to listen empathetically and provide support without judgment.
· Demonstrated empathy and cultural competency to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
· Skills in conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies to assist with challenging situations that may arise in a jail setting.
· Knowledge of and commitment to ethical standards and confidentiality.
· Must be a self-starter with strong initiative, an independent thinker, and a collaborative team member.
· Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and adapt to changing circumstances.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills; capable of interacting with a wide range of community partners and the recovery community.
· Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and partnerships simultaneously.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom), and data management.
· Valid driver’s license, good driving record, car insurance, and reliable transportation.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work is performed in a typical office or administrative environment as well as at partner organizations in the community.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
§ Driving, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, lifting, reaching, talking, hearing, grasping and finger dexterity, repetitive motions.
§ Sitting approximately 50 percent of the time.
§ Standing approximately 20 percent of the time.
§ Walking approximately 20 percent of the time.
§ Driving approximately 10 percent of the time.
§ Requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force continuously.
§ Up to 50 pounds of force infrequently to lift or otherwise move objects.
VISION REQUIREMENTS:
The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, and extensive reading.
