Role Overview
- Position: Freelance Email & SMS Marketing Manager
- Hours: 32-40 hrs/wk
- Compensation: $45-$55/hr
- Type: Contract // Remote
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Email & SMS Marketing Manager to play a key role in our marketing team. This contract position offers the opportunity to work with leading brands in the outdoor gear and health and fitness industries, focusing on innovative and sustainable solutions. The contract is set upon hire date until March 31, 2025, with potential for conversion to full-time based on performance.
The Email Marketing Manager will craft and implement cutting-edge, data-informed retention strategies aimed at fostering loyalty, boosting sales, and cultivating brand advocacy. This person will have a consumer-first mindset, possessing a thorough grasp of the end-to-end customer journey. Their role entails understanding the target audience, what drives their behavior, and effectively nurturing customers into loyal advocates.
This role will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies around communication and lifecycle marketing including ad-hoc campaigns, welcome, post-purchase follow ups, and re-engagement campaigns.
We seek an individual who is collaborative, resourceful, analytical, with a high attention to detail, and customer-centric—a leader capable of guiding a team, leveraging customer data insights, and utilizing retention marketing methods to develop customized, impactful strategies. An eye for detail is a must.
Current and past clients include Hydro Flask, OXO, Osprey, SITKA Gear, GOREWEAR and SmartWool.
Key Responsibilities
- Email/SMS Campaign Development: Collaborate closely with marketing and merchandising teams to plan, execute, and optimize campaigns including segmentation, increased personalization, content creation, automations, A/B testing, and other best practices. Ensure all communication resonates with marketing stories, product launches, monthly promotions and themes.
- Customer Lifecycle Management: Develop comprehensive strategies for customer engagement throughout the lifecycle, including onboarding, post-purchase follow-ups, and re-engagement efforts to maximize customer lifetime value.
- Segmentations and personalization: Drive new strategy for personalization within the hunting category and manage segmentation to drive targeting
- Data Analysis and Insights: Utilize data analytics to track campaign and automation performance and customer behavior to make data driven decisions for continuous improvement. Monitor KPIs like open rate, click through rates, conversion rates, unsubscribe, and bounces.
- Ensure top-tier results: Establish Q/A process, analytics frameworks, and performance monitoring practices to facilitate data-driven decision-making.
- Manage client relationships to ensure accountability, strategic alignment.
- Provide training and guidance to internal stakeholders on email marketing best practices and compliance requirements.

Qualifications
- Required: Thorough understanding of GDPR and CAN-SPAM laws and implementation practices.
- Required: A minimum of 5 years experience managing email campaigns and automations
- Required: A minimum of 3 years experience managing SMS campaigns
- At least 2-3 years working at a Startup or Agency is preferred (Note: this is a fast paced, hard-charging & dynamic environment)
- Proficiency in email analytics tools and metrics tracking including Google Analytics, Google Data Studio.
- Industry Experience: Previous experience in a startup or agency environment preferred; familiarity with the outdoor or health and fitness industries is a plus.
- Experience managing the email portion of a communication calendar
- Experience creating Email & SMS workflows/automations for top-converting campaigns
- Experience building journey maps
- Experience building an end-of-month report that people will actually read!
- 3 year prior experience leading email marketing for an ecommerce brand
- Experience supporting apparel drops & seasonal launches
