Summary
The Architecture and Engineering Coordinator collaborates with the Director of Capital Planning, Facilities Services, Construction Program Management, and various departments and consultants to develop and execute projects identified on the District’s 5-year Capital Plan and other construction projects as assigned. Primary tasks include taking a lead role in the planning, coordinating, assessing, determining appropriate design scope decisions, and implementing assigned construction projects as needed in the District. This position also assists the procurement process by participating in selection committees for contracts necessary to the Capital Improvements department. Knowledge of construction pricing, design process, construction methods, and closeout is essential.
Essential Duties
- Verifies that project designs are compliant to Fulton County Schools Educational Specifications, Design Requirements, and local specific needs
- Coordinates with Principals and Academic Leadership during the design process and after construction completion to ensure the District design standards are supportive of the District’s Instructional Vision
- Communicates with Principals on project status on a regular basis
- Works with architects and engineers during design and construction to ensure projects are in compliance with FCS quality standards and specifications
- Gauges and gathers feedback from maintenance staff and end-users on mechanical and electrical issues, structural and architectural issues, and site/civil issues, concerns, and improvements
- Provides technical status updates to the program manager, architects, and Building Advisory Committees during the construction phase
- Coordinates with IT Department regarding scheduling the installation of technology within facilities
- Collaborates with program managers, Fulton County Schools stakeholders, architects, and consultants to scope mechanical and electrical systems, structural and architectural systems, and site/civil areas for new facilities, additions to existing facilities, and renovations to facilities for local schools
- Reviews budget/estimate comparisons and makes value engineering recommendations based on data from estimators
- Performs drawing reviews and documents associated feedback
- Manages schedules, drawing submittals, reviews, and commentary back to the consultants
- Makes routine visits to active construction projects and communicates noticeable challenges to senior management
- Reviews Fulton County Schools Design Requirements and Educational Specifications and recommends modifications and additions as necessary
- Coordinates with the Procurement Department to prepare performance criteria for new contracts needed by the department
- Assists program manager and architect/engineers in review of test and balance commissioning activities
- Assists Capital Planning Director with the annual Georgia Department of Education application process for construction project reimbursements through the Local Facility Plan
- Conducts planning and research activities related to facility efficiency and the enhancement of the learning environment
- Maintains and develops relationships with local and state building authorities
- Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Construction, Business Administration, Project Management, or related field or equivalent experience (2 years of similar work level experience = 1 year of college – total of 8 years)
Certification/Licensure
Registered Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, or Project Management Professional certification preferred
Experience Qualifications
Minimum of 6 years of experience working as an architect, engineer, project management, contractor, or related field required; Experience with an Architectural, Engineering, or Program Management firm managing multiple facilities and/or experience in a similar leadership role in a large school district preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrates substantial knowledge relating to mechanical and electrical systems, structural and architectural systems and site/civil areas such as HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, energy management, security, power distribution systems, etc
- Must possess professional understanding of construction, design, project management and contract compliance in the K-12 environment
- Extensive knowledge of building construction, finishes, and mechanical and electrical systems
- Ability to interpret building and safety codes
- Ability to effectively communicate and present at large meeting (staff and community)
- Must be able to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects and responsibilities
- Ability to work independently or as a team member
- Must be able to collaborate effectively with District and school personnel, the general public, and work with diverse groups of people
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, project management tools, and AutoCAD (or similar application)
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
Working Conditions
- Normal office environment and some construction project sites
Physical Demands
- Routine physical activity associated with normal office environment and must be able to climb ladders, walk catwalks, and access construction sites
