Job Summary

The Marine Technician Apprentice is responsible for assisting mechanics, electricians, and welder/fabricators to include maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing of G&H Towing’s harbor tugs and facilities.

Job Responsibilities, Required Knowledge, Skills

  • Ability to continuously communicate effectively and professionally
  • Ability to familiarize yourself with company documents, including policies and procedures and the company Towing Management Systems (T.S.M.S)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters and areas of the organization
  • Ability to manage multiple demands simultaneously while maintaining service standards
  • Ability to operate machinery, including power, mechanical, and hand tools
  • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Adhere to all company safety and environmental policies while onboard tugs.
  • Assisting in planning with mechanics, electricians, and welder/fabricators in the procedure qualifications and production as instructed
  • Assist in preventative maintenance on tug and facility equipment
  • Complete any other duties assigned by the Director of Engineering, Manager, Engineering Support, and/or the Welder Forman
  • Conducting daily Toolbox meetings
  • Ensure work areas are kept clean, organized, and well-maintained
  • Ensuring adequate tools and supplies are readily available onboard to facilitate efficient welding operations.
  • Ensuring all tools are kept in safe working conditions, properly maintained, and securely stored
  • Ensuring that all welding is done in accordance with approved procedures
  • Ensuring welding leads and gas hoses are run in a congestion-free and safe man
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Inspect and maintain welding tools and equipment
  • Install tug and facility equipment
  • Interpersonal skills, including self-awareness and the ability to deal professionally with others and always make professional judgments
  • Knowledge of DP vessel operations
  • Must be a team player and support the mission, vision, and goals of the company and the department
  • Must be service-oriented and customer-centric to all internal and external customers
  • Perform basic welding under supervision, such as grinding, cutting, and assembling metal parts.
  • Prepare work areas
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot, test resolutions, and escalate common issues
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Responsible for declining unsafe work and ensuring all tasks are performed in compliance with established HSES safety standards and work practices while making sure all activities adhere to safety and quality requirements.
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, time management, problem-solving, and planning skills
  • Transport and set up welding equipment and materials
  • Troubleshoot and repair tug and facility equipment
  • Write Job Safety Analyses (GARs)

Education & Experience

  • A High school diploma or GED is required; an advanced degree is preferred; extensive experience may be considered in lieu of education
  • A minimum of five years of industry experience in one or more fields: welding, HVAC, electrical, hydraulics, pneumatics, or piping systems.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Requires proficiency with computer hardware and software to include Microsoft Office applications, using a computer with a keyboard and mouse, navigation with a web browser, checking and sending email, and use of internet search engines

Required Licensure & Certifications

  • Requires an active and valid driver's license

Working Conditions

  • Work hours will be assigned based on business needs. By request from the department manager or department director. Work hours may include irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, and after-hours, to assist in completing special tasks or assignments
  • Out-of-regional travel may be required to attend training, seminars, or work-related events
  • Work will be performed in the office and in the field

Special Projects

  • Assist the management and or executive team when requested to complete special projects and complete all assignments within a negotiated time frame established by the department manager
  • Completion of other duties as assigned by the department manager as it relates to the program and position
