Employment Type: Part time Shift: Description: The Summer Nurse Extern participates in the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation; assists in coordinating the patient’s interdisciplinary plan of care; participates in providing patient and family teaching; utilizes an age-specific developmental approach in the care of patients from infants to geriatrics; maintains standards of professional nursing practice and collaborates with the health care team in promoting quality care for all patients. Job responsibilities may also include Unit Secretary or Clinical Technician duties. St. Mary's Health Care System offers a summer Nurse Extern Program which provides rising senior nursing students the opportunity to gain valuable clinical knowledge and skills through summer employment and supports the student nurse's professional development. St. Mary's Nurse Extern Program provides an opportunity for the extern to rotate to multiple clinical settings which may include: Neuroscience, Orthopedics, Medical/Surgical, Step Down Unit, Rehab Medicine, Family Birth Center, Critical Care and Emergency Department. • The nurse extern will work 24-36 hours per week for approximately 9 weeks. • The nurse extern will be paired with an RN for the externship and perform nurse extern responsibilities for the RN's patients as well as Clinical Technician and Unit Secretary responsibilities when needed. • The nurse extern may perform all duties of a nurse EXCEPT administer medications Education: Completion of the first year of an accredited school of nursing program and current/continued enrollment in that program until program completion. Licensure and certification: BLS thru American Heart Association certification required. Skills: Must demonstrate competence in basic nursing care activities appropriate to level of professional education. Job Relationship: Supervised by department director, charge nurse and nurse preceptor.
