What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biologist (Electron Microscopy) position at GAP Solutions?
Position Objective: Provide services as a Biologist (Electron Microscopy) in support of the overall functions of the Director of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Malaria and Vector Research (LMVR) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform experiments in structural biology as it pertains to vaccinology (specifically malaria vaccinology).
- Independently work on structural biology research for the LMIV.
- Comply with all access requirements to cryogenic and negative stain electron microscopy (EM) facilities, coordinating sample preparation for EM, and collecting EM data both remotely and in person.
- Assist other scientists within LMIV in structural biology studies.
- Perform experiments using electron microscopy and structural biology studies in support of the mission of the laboratory.
- Perform experiments in the following areas: structural biology, biophysics, host-pathogen interactions, and human immunology.
- Conduct malaria research toward understanding vaccine candidates using the following techniques: cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, small-angle X-ray scattering, and bio-layer interferometry.
- Assist other laboratory sections with structural biology projects, explain theory and concepts and discuss structural biology assay development experiments, and share the results with the Federal Task Leader and other members of lab.
- Assist the Federal Task Leader and other members working in the laboratory with lab research and experiments.
- Maintain a laboratory notebook and must contribute research findings by sharing data and research findings in manuscript submissions that the laboratory is preparing for publication.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, structural biology or related field is required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of specialized experience.
- Experience with electron microscopy and sample preparation for electron microscopy analysis.
- Experience working with electron microscopy facilities.
- Experience in cryogenic electron microscopy and interpreting results from electron microscopy
- Experience in structural biology and assays that support research in structural biology experimentation.
- Strong organization and communication skills.
- Basic computing skills including experience with Microsoft suite of software and at least one statistical software program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work both independently on research projects with little to no oversight as well as in a team of scientists.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and organize data to share research findings through writing and publishing manuscripts.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.
- Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
