Position Summary:
The Garden Crew Leader is responsible for leading a team (“crew”) of gardeners to ensure day-to-day operations of Garden Life’s client engagements are professionally and properly cared for. Garden Life is a growing fine gardening company, specializing in garden rejuvenation projects, garden design and seasonal care. This position is a full-time seasonal role, starting at the beginning of April and ending in mid- December.
The Crew Leader manages 2-3 crew members and reports directly to the Manager of Garden Life. Together, the leadership team reviews the daily schedule, division of duties among team members and sets expectations around quality and time of work. The Crew Leader is responsible for providing leadership, direction and hands on support when needed to ensure gardening activities such as installing plants, transplanting and weekly care are completed to the expectations of the company and client. Time to time, this may include rejuvenation tasks such as soil preparation, plant installation and mulching. As part of the bigger scope, this role is critical to keeping operations on track and ensuring a high level of client satisfaction and team member engagement.

Responsibilities of the Garden Crew Leader include:

- Delegates appropriate tasks to crew members in order to (i) serve as leader in the management of the team and fulfill administrative and client engagement responsibilities, and (ii) support team members to work at the top of their skillset and grow professionally;
- Regularly surveys landscape(s) and assesses site conditions to ensure quality work;
- Promptly addresses any care concerns in consultation with the owners to ensure needs and design expectations are met;
- Responsible for promoting on-the-job safety at all times, and supervising work to make sure team members are working within their assigned scope and are properly handling tools and materials;
- Professionally communicates (verbally) with current, prospective and former clients;
- Partakes in general care tasks when appropriate, in support of meeting quality, time and care standards;
- Leads regular on-site care visits with professionalism, expertise and excellent customer service;
- Upholds Garden Life’s mission, vision and values and serves as a role model and representative in and outside of work; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- College degree in horticulture or comparable field with 3-5 years of field work, either doing garden maintenance or installation, or equivalent in education and experience. Training is a plus.
- Basic garden maintenance experience required (weeding, deadheading, edging, soil improvement, etc.).
- Understands and can apply correct pruning methods.
- Plant identification of species growing in zone 4 along with seasonal annuals.
- Experience leading people, with demonstrated experience in how to support and motivate team members, lead and delegate tasks, as well manage individual and team performance.
- Excellent communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with a team.
- Basic writing and organizational skills.
- Basic skills of operating hand power tools (reciprocating saw, circular saw, etc.).
- Must be able to carry at least 40 pounds, lift, stretch and bend, with walking throughout the day.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
A college degree is valuable, but years of experience and references can be just as valuable. We will assess each applicant as individuals. Hourly pay rate ranges from $25 - $30/hour depending upon experience, knowledge and work ethic. Garden Life also provides company apparel, boot and rain gear allowances and selective paid holidays off.
