What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gardener/Horticulturist position at Gardens Alive Inc?
The Gardener/Horticulturist will assist in the planning, cultivation and maintenance of a large test garden. This position represents a collection of horticultural brands for one of the largest D2C horticultural businesses in the United States and will report directly to the business’ owner. This position will have the opportunity to trial vegetable and fruit varieties, as well as garden fertilizers and tools, capturing notes on performance, and closely work with marketing leads on capturing insights and observations (along with the owner) via video and copy support from the marketing team.
Responsibilities:
- Plant care: Install, maintain, and prune trees, shrubs, ground cover and turf
- Lawn care: Mow, edge, aerate and fertilize lawns
- Equipment operation: Operate and maintain power tools like mowers, trimmers and blowers
- Irrigation: Install and maintain sprinkler systems
- Pest control: Apply insecticides, pesticides and herbicides ensuring compliance with state and federal laws
- Record keeping: Keep accurate records of work performed
- Ensure safe utilization of short and long handled hand tools as well as safe operation of power tools
- Perform and oversee mowing, string trimming (weed-eating), hedge trimming
- Oversee hand weeding of existing trial or landscape beds
- Field preparation and planting of trial or landscape plants
- Installation of weed fabric, shade cloth and bird netting as needed
- Installation of plant supports in vegetable garden, landscape and orchard
- Maintenance, painting, basic carpentry and other projects as needed
Skills and Abilities:
- 2 years proven work experience in a horticulture/gardening related field
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current Pesticide Applicator license issued by the state of Ohio
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Basic working knowledge of irrigation systems
- Knowledge of horticulture and plant care techniques
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as on a team
