Responsibilities

The Nursing Professional Development Practitioner develops and uses tools, theories, skills and knowledge of NPD to improve the practice of staff. The Scope and Standards of Nursing Professional Development Practice describe key roles and responsibilities for which the NPD Practitioner is accountable. They include:

  • Learning facilitator. The NPD practitioner uses the educational design process to bridge the knowledge, skills, and/or practice gaps identified through needs assessment.
  • Change agent. The NPD practitioner actively works to transform processes at micro, meso-, and macro-system levels through inspiration, initiation, adoption, and sustainment of and adaptation to change using project management and improvement processes.
  • Mentor. The NPD practitioner advances the profession by contributing to the professional development of others and supporting life-long learning as individuals develop across practice, professional and educational settings.
  • Leader. The NPD Practitioner influences the interprofessional practice and learning environments, the NPD specialty, the profession of nursing, and healthcare.
  • Champion of scientific inquiry. The NPD practitioner promotes the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and the use of evidence to advance NPD practice, guide clinical practice, and improve patient care.
  • Advocate for NPD specialty. The NPD practitioner actively supports, promotes, and demonstrates nursing professional development as a nursing practice specialty.
  • Partner for practice transitions. The NPD practitioner supports the transition of nurses and other healthcare team members across learning and practice environments, roles, and professional stages.

Overall outputs of NPD practice are learning, change, professional role competence and growth, which ultimately lead to optimal patient care, population health, and protection of the public.

The compensation range for the role is $93,756 USD -$117,195 USD per year.

Garnet Health System provides a compensation range to comply with the New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits. When determining a team member’s compensation and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity).

Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in nursing / education / or Post-Master’s certification in nursing education preferred.

Minimum Experience: 5 years of perinatal nursing experience in either a hospital or academic setting, or demonstrated expertise in a clinically equivalent role.

Required Certification/Registration

  • Current New York State registered nurse license.
  • BLS/ACLS provider status required, BLS/ACLS instructor status required, or achieved within 1 year of date of hire.
  • NRP provider required, NRP instructor required, or achieved within 6 months of date of hire.
  • NCC certification in specialty area (EFM or Inpatient OB or Maternal Newborn or Neonatal)
  • AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructor preferred
  • STABLE certification required, STABLE Instructor preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Considerable standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Considerable visual demands.
  • During any patient transferring task, if any caregiver is required to lift more than 35 lbs of a patient's weight, then the patient should be considered to be fully dependent and assistive devices should be used. (Waters, T. [2007]
  • Ergonomic stressors includes moderate to frequent heavy (lifting, positioning, pushing, and/ or transferring of patients). Must participate in Safe Patient Handling Initiatives.
  • American with Disability Act Requirements: External and Internal applicants, as well as position incumbents, must be able to perform the essential position responsibilities as listed in this position description either aided or unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation to be determined by the organization on a case by case basis.

Working Conditions

  • Environmental Demands and Exposure to Hazards: Works in a clean, well-lighted, heated or ventilated facility. No routine exposure to hazards.
  • Physical Demands: Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks. Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity to operate computer and office equipment. Can withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to lift 10 lbs.
  • Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships, to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new information, and prioritize tasks. Possesses critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility. Ability to multi-task. Required detailed attention to work in an environment where interruptions cannot be controlled. Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs and expectations. May be subject to irregular hours including evenings or potentially weekends to participate in operational and community events as necessary.
