Position Summary

The Student Support Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive support to students to promote their academic success, social-emotional well-being, and overall personal development. This role serves as a bridge between students, families, educators, and community resources to remove barriers to learning and create a supportive school environment. This role requires a combination of strong administrative skills, excellent communication abilities, and a general understanding of educational program management, all contributing to GAPS' mission, vision, and culture.

Key Duties

· Academic Support: Assist students in developing study skills, setting academic goals, and implementing intervention strategies in collaboration with coordinators and teachers.

· Social and Emotional Support: Provide coaching, promote positive behavior, and connect students with support resources.

· Student Advocacy: Proactively address systemic barriers to ensure students have equitable access to resources, opportunities, and a supportive learning environment that fosters their success.

· Progress Monitoring: Track student development, assess intervention effectiveness, and adjust strategies as needed.

· Professional Development: Attend required meetings and engage in professional development opportunities to stay informed on the latest educational trends and practices.

Team Shared Responsibilities

· Student Recruitment and Retention: Engage actively in recruitment and retention efforts, maintaining effective communication with students, parents, and school personnel to foster strong relationships and continuous enrollment.

· Documentation and Case Management: Produce and manage all necessary documentation for student enrollment and provide continuous case management to support student needs.

· Compliance and Reporting: Ensure that all program activities comply with grant guidelines and complete required reports for internal and external stakeholders.

· Event Coordination: Assist in the organization and management of school engagement events, including career days, college tours, and afterschool programs, to enhance student participation and engagement.

· Community and Donor Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with alumni, community members, and donors to support outreach efforts and enhance program visibility.

Competencies

· Communication Skills: Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with students, parents, school personnel, and other stakeholders through various mediums (oral, written, digital).

· Organizational Proficiency: Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, maintain accurate records, and effectively coordinate events and programs to support student success.

· Program Support: Experience in supporting the implementation and evaluation of programs and initiatives that address the needs of K-12 students, ensuring engagement and effectiveness.

· Stakeholder Engagement: Experience in building and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, families, community partners, and program supporters.

· Adaptability and Problem Solving: Capable of adapting to changing circumstances and solving problems creatively to overcome challenges and improve program outcomes.

Qualifications

· High school diploma with 1-3 years of experience in youth services, community outreach, or program coordination.

· Experience supporting community engagement, event coordination, or student-focused initiatives.

· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to build relationships with students, families, and community partners.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and basic program management tools.

· A proactive, professional attitude with a willingness to learn and grow in the role.

· Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for events and student support efforts.

Work environment

Travel required

Occasional local travel to partner sites, trainings, and educational events.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 35 per week
