Description
Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement was established to provide for the health and safety of citizens and protect them from animals and the threat of animals. The mission of Animal Care and Enforcement is not only to enhance the safety of citizens, but also to ensure the proper care and treatment of animals. This is accomplished through animal-related services which reflect our professionalism and a concern for responsible pet ownership.
Examples of Duties
The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency AND a minimum of 1 year of experience in the apprehension, care, or disposal of animals required. A valid driver’s license, without restrictions, is required.
Knowledge of County geography and County and State laws related to humane animal control. Ability to interact with the public and other agencies and ability to communicate effectively. Work is very heavy work requiring exerting in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force to move objects. Requires standing, walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs.

- Respond to citizen complaints regarding animal bites, cruelty investigations, public nuisance, wildlife animals, rabies suspects, and sick or injured animals.
- Determines if a violation of law or ordinance exists or has occurred and applies appropriate legal response which may include civil or criminal prosecutions. Educates the general public and animal owners about positive responsible pet ownership
- Utilizes computer system for data entry of impounded animals, verify shot records, complaint histories and prior actions taken.
- Apprehend and transport stray, unwanted, and diseased or injured animals to the County Animal Shelter.
- Rabies activities with local Health Department and State Lab in Raleigh by processing animals for delivery to the State Lab for rabies analysis. Participates in rabies canvassing of neighborhoods to ensure compliance, of State Law with regards to pet rabies vaccinations.
- Participates in and performs animal euthanasia at the County animal shelter.
- Appears in criminal court, civil hearings and administrative proceedings to testify on actions taken.
- Advises and receives information from other County, State or municipal agencies, as required.
- Safely operates a Gaston County motor vehicle during situations and calls. Maintain cleanliness of vehicle.
- Maintains a current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.
