What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quality Control Technician position at GCC?
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the direction of the laboratory supervisor or the shift supervisor the Quality Control Technician (QCT) performs tests on material in the production process to assure plant conformance to quality standards and compliance with the American Society of Testing Material and American Petroleum Institute requirements. QCTs will pick up samples of cement, clinker, raw material or any material that needs to be tested.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Balance, beaker, burette, wash bottles, evaporating dish, hotplate, pipette, grinding mill, pulverizer, mesh screen, testing equipment, x-ray, computer, microscope, AMT, Blaine meter, Gillmore needle, compression tester, assorted hand tools and miscellaneous equipment.
PROCESSES, PROCEDURES AND ROUTINES USED: Pick up samples from various stages of production and perform chemical and physical tests on finished materials or any sample needed by the plant or lab.
MATERIALS: Sand, shale, iron ore, limestone, gypsum, clinker, cement, coal, chemicals, water and miscellaneous materials.
SOURCE OF SUPERVISION: Laboratory Supervisor or Shift Supervisor.
DIRECTION EXERCISED: None.
WORKING PROCEDURE:
1. Collect samples from finish mills and perform Blaine test every two hours and perform the Gillmore test every eight hours, or when needed.
2. Test cement for pack set and S03 as needed.
3. Collect samples from Loesche Mill and kiln feed. Test for fineness and x-ray analysis as needed.
4. Test wet raw mills for moisture and fineness two times per shift, or as needed.
5. Process clinker for freelime and x-ray analysis two times per shift, per kiln or as needed.
6. Prepare slurry samples for x-ray or wet analysis when needed.
7. Perform unscheduled tests on miscellaneous materials as needed.
8. Record results of tests as permanent logs.
9. Advise supervisor of unusual test results or test results that don't meet specifications.
10. Titrate samples to determine percent of CaC03 as needed.
11. May need to operate compression tester occasionally.
12. Inform control room operators of changes needed in process to assure quality standard.
13. Perform microscopic analysis of clinker.
14. Determine moisture content and fineness of coal and raw material.
15. Make copies of certificate of compliance.
16. Perform calculations, provide documentation and record data.
17. Know how to start up AMT system after power outages and correct problems with equipment. Fill grinding aid tablets, empty dust system and clean filters.
18. Determine percentage CL on Stg IV material, insoluble and residue loss on ignition.
19. Prepare various stock laboratory solutions.
20. Determine 50 and 200 mesh fineness on 24-hour Loesche Mill composite.
21. Determine 200 mesh fineness on Loesche mill product every 2 hours.
22. General cleaning such as vacuuming, sweeping, emptying trash and painting.
23. Perform pack set test once per day or as needed.
24. Will maintain a safe working environment, adhere to safety policies and practices, perform daily housekeeping of assigned area, perform daily workplace inspections, adhere to plant policies and proper use of plant radios.
25. Be familiar with MSHA safety rules, safety procedures for plant mobile equipment, lockout/tagout policy, confined space permit policy, hot work policy, emergency response plan, arc flash/shock and burn protection, proper containment and disposal process (via Waste Management Plan) for lubricants, paints/solvents and other environmentally sensitive materials.
26. Ensure quality of work performed, participate in continuous improvement system, observe and promote best practices, good time management and be able to troubleshoot/analyze root cause failure.
27. Will work where and when needed as directed by plant supervisory personnel to meet plant needs.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS DESIRED:
1. High school education with emphasis on chemistry.
2. Good knowledge of chemical analysis.
3. Working knowledge of x-ray analysis.
4. Basic math skills: add, subtract, multiply, divide, fractions, percentages.
5. Ability to keep neat and accurate records.
6. General knowledge of cement production.
7. Working knowledge of ASTM procedures.
8. Must be able to work shifts and work in the plant when needed as directed by the plants supervisory personnel to meet plant needs.
9. Good physical condition as position may require bending, kneeling, walking, standing, climbing, stairs and lifting; high degree of manual dexterity and coordination and good eye/hand coordination.
